Why is it called Al-Hujurat?
«الحجرات» is the plural of «حجرة», a room. In 49:4 Allah rebukes those who called out to the Prophet (ﷺ) from behind his rooms (the chambers of his wives beside the Prophet's Mosque). The surah takes its name from this word.
Indeed, those who call you, [O Muhammad], from behind the chambers - most of them do not use reason
Period and occasion of revelation
The surah was revealed around 9 AH, when delegations from the Arab tribes were coming to Madinah to meet the Prophet (ﷺ) and accept Islam. Many of these visitors did not know the manners of the Prophet's (ﷺ) house and gathering, and some of the Muslims had themselves not yet learnt how to behave. Several events lie behind its ayat.
- 49:1 to 2: a delegation of Banu Tamim came, and Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) and Hazrat Umar (RA) differed in front of the Prophet (ﷺ) about whom to appoint as their chief, and their voices rose; the ayat were revealed (Sahih Bukhari).
- 49:4 to 5: some of the Banu Tamim called the Prophet (ﷺ) loudly from outside his rooms.
- 49:6: according to the commentators, a man sent to collect zakat from a tribe returned with a false report, and the believers were told to verify news.
- 49:9: a quarrel between two groups of the Ansar, who then fought with sticks and shoes, as reported by Hazrat Anas (RA) (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
- 49:14: some Bedouins from outside Madinah claimed to be believers without true faith in their hearts.

49:1 to 5, 7 to 8Etiquette with the Prophet (ﷺ)نبی کریم ﷺ کے ساتھ ادبOften examined
O you who have believed, do not put [yourselves] before Allah and His Messenger but fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing (1) O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet or be loud to him in speech like the loudness of some of you to others, lest your deeds become worthless while you perceive not (2)
The commands
احکام
- Do not put yourselves forward before Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) (49:1): do not decide any matter, in religion or in public life, before Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) have decided it. The Quran and Sunnah come first.
- Fear Allah (49:1). Allah is Hearing («سَمِيعٌ») and Knowing («عَلِيمٌ»): these are the two attributes of Allah in the ayah.
- Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet (ﷺ) (49:2).
- Do not speak loudly to him as you speak loudly to one another (49:2).
The warning is that your deeds may become worthless without you perceiving it (49:2). Disrespect to the Messenger (ﷺ) can destroy the deeds of a believer.
The reward of those who show respect (49:3)
Indeed, those who lower their voices before the Messenger of Allah - they are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for righteousness. For them is forgiveness and great reward
Those who lower their voices before the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for righteousness; for them are forgiveness and a great reward. After this ayah the Companions became very careful. Hazrat Thabit bin Qais (RA), who had a loud voice, feared for himself and stayed at home, and the Prophet (ﷺ) gave him the good news that he was of the people of Paradise (Sahih Bukhari).
Calling from outside the rooms (49:4 to 5)
Indeed, those who call you, [O Muhammad], from behind the chambers - most of them do not use reason (4) And if they had been patient until you [could] come out to them, it would have been better for them. But Allah is Forgiving and Merciful (5)
- Those who called the Prophet (ﷺ) from behind the rooms were rude; most of them did not use reason.
- If they had been patient until he came out, it would have been better for them (49:5). Allah is Forgiving and Merciful, and He forgives their lack of knowledge.
Obedience to him (49:7 to 8)
Allah reminds the believers that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) is among them, and if he followed their opinions in many matters, they would be in difficulty (49:7). The believers should follow him, because Allah has made faith dear to their hearts and made disbelief, defiance and disobedience hateful to them. That is His favour and grace (49:7 to 8).
Often examined
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful
Allah commands: if a disobedient person («فَاسِق») brings you news, investigate it, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and then regret what you did. The ayah gives a principle of social justice: do not act on a report without checking it, especially when the one who brings it is not trustworthy.
Points
نکات
- «فَاسِق» is one who is known to disobey Allah and lies; his report must be verified.
- The reason: otherwise you may harm innocent people and regret it.
- Background: according to the commentators, the ayah was revealed about a man who was sent to collect zakat from a tribe and returned with a false report that they refused.
- The principle covers rumours, gossip and today's social media.
49:9 to 10Reconciliation and brotherhoodصلح اور اخوتOften examined
And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly (9) The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy (10)
The steps in 49:9
- If two groups of believers fight, make peace between them.
- If one group oppresses the other, fight the group that oppresses until it returns to the command of Allah.
- When it returns, make peace between them with justice and be fair. Allah loves those who act justly.
Brotherhood (49:10)
- The believers are brothers: «إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ إِخْوَةٌ». The bond of faith is stronger than blood, tribe or colour.
- So make peace between your brothers and fear Allah, that you may receive mercy.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said that a Muslim is the brother of a Muslim, he does not wrong him and does not hand him over to the enemy (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
Often examined
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers
Forbidden in 49:11
- Mockery: no group of men should mock another, and no women should mock other women, since they may be better than them.
- Insulting and finding fault: do not insult one another («لَا تَلْمِزُوا أَنفُسَكُمْ»).
- Offensive nicknames: do not call each other by names that hurt.
- It is wretched to be called a sinner after having faith; whoever does not repent is a wrongdoer.
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful
Forbidden in 49:12
- Much suspicion: avoid much suspicion, since some suspicion is a sin.
- Spying: do not look for the faults of others.
- Backbiting («غِيبَة»): do not speak ill of one another behind the back. The Quran compares it to eating the flesh of one's dead brother, a thing everyone detests.
- The remedy: fear Allah; Allah accepts repentance and is merciful.
The Prophet (ﷺ) explained that backbiting is to mention your brother in a way he dislikes; if what you say is true it is backbiting, and if it is false it is slander (Sahih Muslim). He also said to beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the falsest of speech (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
49:13Equality of mankind and taqwaانسانوں کی برابری اور تقویٰOften examined
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted
- Allah addresses all of mankind, «يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ», not only the believers.
- All people were created from a male and a female, so all have one origin.
- He made them into peoples and tribes so that they may know one another, not so that they may boast or look down on others.
- The most honoured in the sight of Allah is the most righteous («أَتْقَاكُمْ»), not the richest, the strongest or the highest in descent.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said in the same spirit that all people are the children of Adam (AS) and Adam (AS) was created from dust (Tirmidhi), and in his Farewell Sermon he said that no Arab has any superiority over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab over an Arab, nor a white over a black or a black over a white, except by taqwa (Musnad Ahmad).

- They never doubt.
- They strive with their wealth and lives in Allah's way. These are the truthful.
Do not make Islam a favour (49:16 to 18)
- Allah knows everything in the heavens and the earth; you cannot teach Him about your religion (49:16).
- Some think they have done the Prophet (ﷺ) a favour by accepting Islam. Say: do not count your Islam as a favour to me; rather Allah has done a favour to you by guiding you to faith, if you are truthful (49:17).
- Allah knows the unseen of the heavens and the earth and sees all that you do (49:18).
Ruku 1, ayat 1 to 10Ruku 1: manners with Allah and the Messenger (ﷺ), news and peace
The first ruku (49:1 to 10) teaches obedience and respect for Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ): do not go ahead of them, do not raise the voice above his, and do not call him from outside his rooms. Allah praises those who lower their voices (49:3). Then it gives two social rules: verify news brought by a fasiq (49:6), and make peace between believers who fight, with justice, because the believers are brothers (49:9 to 10).
O you who have believed, do not put [yourselves] before Allah and His Messenger but fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing (1) O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet or be loud to him in speech like the loudness of some of you to others, lest your deeds become worthless while you perceive not (2)
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful
The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy

Ruku 2, ayat 11 to 18Ruku 2: manners among people, equality and faith
The second ruku (49:11 to 18) forbids mockery, insults, nicknames, suspicion, spying and backbiting (49:11 to 12). It then declares that all people come from one father and mother and the most honoured is the most pious (49:13). It ends by explaining the difference between islam and iman (49:14), describes the true believers (49:15) and tells those who boast of their Islam that Allah has favoured them (49:17).
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted
