Surah At-Talaq
Surah At-Talaq is the 65th surah of the Quran, a Madani surah of 12 ayat and 2 rukus, in para 28. It is also called the shorter Surah An-Nisa because it completes the rules of divorce given in Al-Baqarah and An-Nisa. It teaches the right way to divorce (at the start of the iddah, in purity, counting the iddah, with two witnesses), the kinds of iddah, the housing, maintenance and nursing of the divorced woman, and it promises a way out, provision and ease to those who fear and rely on Allah. It ends with the warning of the towns that disobeyed and the creation of the seven heavens. The model paper has no question from this surah, but the framework sets long topic 26 (rulings on divorce and the benefits of following them) from it, and the board's usual questions are its name, the occasion of 65:1 and the ayat 65:1, 65:2 to 4 and 65:6 to 7.

Why is it called At-Talaq?
The surah begins with the rules of divorce: «إِذَا طَلَّقْتُمُ النِّسَاءَ», when you divorce women (65:1). Its main subject is divorce («طلاق») and what follows it, so it was named At-Talaq.
O Prophet, when you [Muslims] divorce women, divorce them for [the commencement of] their waiting period and keep count of the waiting period, and fear Allah, your Lord. Do not turn them out of their [husbands'] houses, nor should they [themselves] leave [during that period] unless they are committing a clear immorality. And those are the limits [set by] Allah. And whoever transgresses the limits of Allah has certainly wronged himself. You know not; perhaps Allah will bring about after that a [different] matter
Why the shorter An-Nisa?
Surah An-Nisa (the longer one) and Al-Baqarah have rules about women, marriage and divorce. This surah is shorter and completes the rules of divorce, so it is also called the shorter Surah An-Nisa, a name reported from Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud (RA).
Period and occasion of revelation
The surah is Madani and was revealed after Surah Al-Baqarah, in which the first rules of divorce and iddah had been given (2:228 to 237). The common occasion given for 65:1 is the following. Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (RA) divorced his wife while she was in her monthly period. Hazrat Umar (RA) told the Prophet (ﷺ), who was displeased and ordered that Abdullah take her back and keep her until she became clean, then have her period and become clean again; afterwards, if he wished, he could divorce her before touching her. The Prophet (ﷺ) said that this is the iddah in which Allah commanded that women be divorced (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).

65:1 to 2The method of divorce in Islam (long topic 26)اسلام میں طلاق کا طریقہ (تفصیلی سوال 26)Often examined

You know not; perhaps Allah will bring about after that a [different] matter (1) And when they have [nearly] fulfilled their term, either retain them according to acceptable terms or part with them according to acceptable terms. And bring to witness two just men from among you and establish the testimony for [the acceptance of] Allah. That is instructed to whoever should believe in Allah and the Last day. And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (2)
In Islam divorce is allowed as a last resort, but it must follow the limits of Allah. The rulings of 65:1 and 65:2 are:
- Divorce at the start of the iddah: divorce them for their iddah, that is, at a time when the iddah can begin at once, in a state of purity («طُهْر») in which the husband has not had relations with her, and not during the monthly period (65:1; Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
- Count the iddah: keep a careful count of the waiting period (65:1) so that the rights of both sides are known.
- Fear Allah, your Lord (65:1).
- Do not turn them out of their houses, and they should not leave, unless they commit a clear indecency (65:1).
- Keep the limits of Allah: whoever crosses them has wronged himself. The reason for the waiting: Allah may bring about some new matter, that is, a chance to return (65:1).
- When the term is nearly complete, either keep them in a good way or part from them in a good way (65:2).
- Bring two just men from among you as witnesses, and give the testimony for Allah's sake (65:2).
Often examined
And those who no longer expect menstruation among your women - if you doubt, then their period is three months, and [also for] those who have not menstruated. And for those who are pregnant, their term is until they give birth. And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him of his matter ease
The iddah is the period a woman must wait after divorce or the death of her husband before she may marry another. It differs according to her condition:
| Woman | Iddah | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Divorced woman who still has her monthly periods | Three monthly periods | 2:228 (Al-Baqarah) |
| Divorced woman who no longer expects periods (past menopause) | Three months | 65:4 |
| Girl who has not yet had a period | Three months | 65:4 |
| Pregnant woman | Until she gives birth | 65:4 |
| Widow | Four months and ten days | 2:234 (Al-Baqarah) |
| Divorced before the marriage was consummated | No iddah | 33:49 (Al-Ahzab) |
Surah At-Talaq itself gives two kinds: three months for those who no longer expect periods or have not had them, and until delivery for the pregnant (65:4). At the end of the ayah comes the promise: whoever fears Allah, He makes his matter easy for him.
65:6 to 7Housing, maintenance and nursingرہائش، نان نفقہ اور رضاعتOften examined
Lodge them [in a section] of where you dwell out of your means and do not harm them in order to oppress them. And if they should be pregnant, then spend on them until they give birth. And if they breastfeed for you, then give them their payment and confer among yourselves in the acceptable way; but if you are in discord, then there may breastfeed for the father another woman (6) Let a man of wealth spend from his wealth, and he whose provision is restricted - let him spend from what Allah has given him. Allah does not charge a soul except [according to] what He has given it. Allah will bring about, after hardship, ease (7)
- Housing: the husband must let the divorced wife live during her iddah in the house where he lives, according to his means (65:6).
- No harm: do not harass them so as to make life hard for them (65:6).
- Maintenance of the pregnant: if they are pregnant, spend on them until they give birth (65:6).
- Nursing: if they nurse your child, give them their payment (65:6).
- Mutual consultation in a good way; if there is difficulty, another woman may nurse the child for the father (65:6).
- Spend according to means: the wealthy from his wealth, the one with limited provision from what Allah gave him; Allah does not burden a soul beyond what He has given it, and after hardship He brings ease (65:7).
65:2 to 5The promises of taqwa and tawakkulتقویٰ اور توکل کے وعدےOften examined
And when they have [nearly] fulfilled their term, either retain them according to acceptable terms or part with them according to acceptable terms. And bring to witness two just men from among you and establish the testimony for [the acceptance of] Allah. That is instructed to whoever should believe in Allah and the Last day. And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (2) And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent (3)
In the middle of the rules of divorce, the surah repeats the promises for those who keep taqwa and rely on Allah. A person in a hard family situation is given hope:
- Whoever fears Allah, He makes for him a way out (65:2).
- He provides for him from where he does not expect (65:3).
- Whoever relies on Allah, He is sufficient for him; Allah will accomplish His purpose, and He has set a measure for everything (65:3).
- Whoever fears Allah, He makes his matter easy (65:4).
- Whoever fears Allah, He removes his misdeeds and increases his reward (65:5).

And how many a city was insolent toward the command of its Lord and His messengers, so We took it to severe account and punished it with a terrible punishment (8) And it tasted the bad consequence of its affair, and the outcome of its affair was loss (9)
- Many a town was insolent against the command of its Lord and His messengers; Allah called it to a severe account and punished it with a terrible punishment (65:8).
- They tasted the evil result of their conduct, and the end of their affair was loss («
- Allah prepared for them a severe punishment, so those of understanding who believe should fear Allah (65:10).
Allah has sent down to us the Quran and a Messenger (ﷺ) who recites the clear ayat of Allah, to bring the believers who do good out of darkness into light; for them are gardens beneath which rivers flow, for ever (65:10 to 11). The surah ends with the creation of seven heavens and of the earth the like of them, with His command descending among them, so that we know that Allah has power over all things and encompasses all things in knowledge (65:12).
Ruku 1, ayat 1 to 7Ruku 1: Rulings of divorce, iddah and maintenance
Ruku 1 addresses the Prophet (ﷺ) and, through him, the Muslims. It gives the method of divorce, the iddah and its kinds, the duty of housing, maintenance and nursing, and the promises of taqwa and tawakkul.
And those who no longer expect menstruation among your women - if you doubt, then their period is three months, and [also for] those who have not menstruated. And for those who are pregnant, their term is until they give birth. And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him of his matter ease
Lodge them [in a section] of where you dwell out of your means and do not harm them in order to oppress them. And if they should be pregnant, then spend on them until they give birth. And if they breastfeed for you, then give them their payment and confer among yourselves in the acceptable way; but if you are in discord, then there may breastfeed for the father another woman

And how many a city was insolent toward the command of its Lord and His messengers, so We took it to severe account and punished it with a terrible punishment
