Surah Az-Zumar
Surah Az-Zumar is the 39th surah of the Quran, a Makki surah of 75 ayat and 8 rukus in paras 23 and 24, named after the word «زُمَرًا» (groups) in 39:71 and 39:73, where the disbelievers are driven to Hell and the God-fearing led to Paradise in groups. It was revealed in Makkah in the years of hard persecution, before the hijrah to Abyssinia, and it calls to sincere worship of Allah alone, rejects the idea that idols or others can bring us near to Him, and shows Allah's signs in creation. Its best-known message is Allah's address to His servants: the call to the believers to fear Him (39:10) and the call to sinners not to despair of His mercy (39:53). It ends with the great scene of the Day of Judgement and the two groups. FBISE asks about the name, the introduction, the address to the servants (long topic 24) and printed ayat such as 39:53, 39:10, 39:9 and 39:29.

Why is it called Az-Zumar?
The word «زُمَرًا» (groups) comes twice at the end of the surah: the disbelievers will be driven to Hell in groups (39:71) and the God-fearing will be led to Paradise in groups (39:73). The word «زُمَر» is the plural of «زُمْرَة», a group. The surah is named after this scene.
But those who feared their Lord will be driven to Paradise in groups until, when they reach it while its gates have been opened and its keepers say, "Peace be upon you; you have become pure; so enter it to abide eternally therein," [they will enter]
Period and background of revelation
The surah has no single occasion of revelation. It was revealed in Makkah when the Quraish were persecuting the Muslims severely. Tafheem-ul-Quran notes that 39:10, «وَأَرْضُ اللّٰهِ وَاسِعَةٌ» (Allah's earth is spacious), points to the time just before the hijrah to Abyssinia (in the 5th year of prophethood), when believers were told that if the land of Makkah is narrow for them, Allah's earth is wide.
The circumstances it answers are these:
- The Quraish worshipped idols and said: we worship them only so that they bring us nearer to Allah (39:3). The surah rejects this and commands sincere worship of Allah alone (39:2 to 3).
- They threatened the Prophet (ﷺ) with their false gods; Allah answers: is Allah not enough for His servant (39:36 to 38)?
- They invited the Prophet (ﷺ) to worship their gods; the answer is: is it other than Allah that you order me to worship, O ignorant ones (39:64)? (This background is mentioned by commentators in the books of tafsir.)
- Some sinners who had committed great sins feared they could never be forgiven; 39:53 gave them hope (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (RA)).

Virtues of the surah and of its ayat
Only well-known authentic material is given here. No separate hadith on the reward of reciting the whole surah is firmly established, but the following are reported.
- Hazrat Aishah (RA) reports that the Prophet (ﷺ) used not to sleep until he had recited Surah Bani Israil (Al-Isra) and Surah Az-Zumar (Tirmidhi).
- Hazrat Ibn Abbas (RA) reports that some polytheists who had killed and committed zina much came to the Prophet (ﷺ) asking if there was any expiation, and Allah revealed 39:53 (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim). This is why 39:53 is called one of the most hope-giving ayat of the Quran.
- Hazrat Abdullah bin Masud (RA) reports that a Jewish scholar told the Prophet (ﷺ) that Allah will hold the heavens, the earth and everything on a finger each on the Day of Judgement; the Prophet (ﷺ) laughed in agreement and recited 39:67 (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
- 39:42 says Allah takes the souls at death and in sleep. The Prophet (ﷺ) taught a prayer before sleeping: 'if You keep my soul, have mercy on it; if You release it, protect it as You protect Your righteous servants' (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, from Hazrat Abu Hurairah (RA)).
Sincere worship and the rejection of shirkخالص بندگی اور شرک کی تردیدOften examined
This is the first and main message of the surah: religion must be pure for Allah. Nobody can be an intermediary who brings a person nearer to Allah by being worshipped.
Indeed, We have sent down to you the Book, [O Muhammad], in truth. So worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion (2) Unquestionably, for Allah is the pure religion. And those who take protectors besides Him [say], "We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to Allah in position." Indeed, Allah will judge between them concerning that over which they differ. Indeed, Allah does not guide he who is a liar and [confirmed] disbeliever (3)
Points from the ayat
- Allah sent down the Book in truth, so worship Him, making religion sincere for Him (39:2).
- The pure religion belongs to Allah alone (39:3).
- The pagans said: we worship them only to bring us nearer to Allah. Allah will judge between them on what they differ about, and He does not guide a liar and disbeliever (39:3).
- The Prophet (ﷺ) himself is commanded to worship Allah sincerely and to be the first of the Muslims; he fears the punishment of a great Day if he disobeys (39:11 to 13). He says: Allah alone do I worship, sincere to Him in my religion (39:14).
Allah is enough; idols cannot help
- Is Allah not sufficient for His servant? Yet they frighten you with those besides Him (39:36). Whom Allah guides, none can misguide (39:37).
- They admit that Allah created the heavens and the earth. Can those they call upon remove Allah's harm or hold back His mercy? The answer: «حَسْبِيَ اللّٰهُ», Allah is enough for me; in Him the trusting trust (39:38).
- Intercession is wholly Allah's; nobody intercedes without His permission (39:43 to 44). When Allah alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who deny the Hereafter shrink; when others are mentioned, they rejoice (39:45).
- If you associate anything with Allah, your deeds become void and you will be among the losers; worship Allah alone and be among the grateful (39:65 to 66).
And it was already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate [anything] with Allah, your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers (65) Rather, worship [only] Allah and be among the grateful (66)
Signs of Allah's power in creation
The surah proves tawhid from what people see around them. These ayat explain why only Allah deserves worship.
He created the heavens and earth in truth. He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. Unquestionably, He is the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver
- Heavens and earth: He created them in truth; He wraps the night over the day and the day over the night; He made the sun and the moon run for a fixed term (39:5).
- Man: He created you from one soul, then made its mate from it, and gave you eight mates of grazing livestock (39:6).
- Birth: He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, stage after stage, in three darknesses (39:6). The commentators explain the three darknesses as the belly, the womb and the covering around the child.
- Rain and crops: He sends water from the sky, makes it flow as springs in the earth, brings out crops of different colours, then they dry, turn yellow and become broken straw (39:21). In this is a reminder for people of understanding.
- He is the Creator of all things and the Disposer of all affairs; the keys of the heavens and the earth are His (39:62 to 63).
- He is «الْوَاحِدُ الْقَهَّارُ», the One, the Prevailing (39:4). Allah has no son; if He had wished to take a son, He could have chosen whatever He willed from His creation, but He is far above that (39:4).
Do you not see that Allah sends down rain from the sky and makes it flow as springs [and rivers] in the earth; then He produces thereby crops of varying colors; then they dry and you see them turned yellow; then He makes them [scattered] debris. Indeed in that is a reminder for those of understanding
Allah's address to His servantsاللہ کا اپنے بندوں سے خطابOften examined
Allah addresses His «عِبَاد» (servants) in this surah in several places. The papers ask what He tells them and which of our deeds need reform. Know the four addresses and what each asks of us.

Man in hardship and in ease
The surah twice describes the same weakness of man, once in 39:8 and again, more strongly, in 39:49 to 52.
And when adversity touches man, he calls upon his Lord, turning to Him [alone]; then when He bestows on him a favor from Himself, he forgets Him whom he called upon before, and he attributes to Allah equals to mislead [people] from His way. Say, "Enjoy your disbelief for a little; indeed, you are of the companions of the Fire
And when adversity touches man, he calls upon Us; then when We bestow on him a favor from Us, he says, "I have only been given it because of [my] knowledge." Rather, it is a trial, but most of them do not know
- When harm touches man he calls on his Lord, turning to Him; when Allah gives him a favour he forgets Him whom he called on before and sets up equals to Allah (39:8). Allah tells him: enjoy your disbelief a little, you are of the people of the Fire.
- When harm touches him he calls Us; when We give a favour he says: I was only given it because of my knowledge. Allah answers: rather it is a trial (39:49).
- The earlier nations said the same, and it did not help them; the evil results of their deeds struck them (39:50 to 51). Qarun said a similar thing in 28:78.
- Allah gives wide provision to whom He wills and restricts it; in this are signs for believers (39:52).
The obedient, the knowers and the people of understandingفرماں بردار، علم والے اور عقل والےOften examined
The surah draws a picture of the true believer and shows who is called «اُولُوا الْاَلْبَابِ» (people of understanding).
Is one who is devoutly obedient during periods of the night, prostrating and standing [in prayer], fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, [like one who does not]? Say, "Are those who know equal to those who do not know?" Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding
But those who have avoided Taghut, lest they worship it, and turned back to Allah - for them are good tidings. So give good tidings to My servants (17) Who listen to speech and follow the best of it. Those are the ones Allah has guided, and those are people of understanding (18)
- The devoutly obedient: he stands and prostrates in the hours of the night, fears the Hereafter and hopes for his Lord's mercy (39:9).
- Are those who know equal to those who do not know? Only people of understanding take heed (39:9).
- The believers who avoid Taghut (false gods) and turn to Allah get good news (39:17).
- They listen to speech and follow the best of it. These are the ones Allah has guided and these are the people of understanding (39:18).
- The one whose breast Allah has opened to Islam is on a light from his Lord; woe to those whose hearts are hard against Allah's remembrance (39:22).
- The Quran is the best statement, a Book whose parts agree and repeat. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver, then their skins and hearts soften at Allah's remembrance (39:23).
Allah has sent down the best statement: a consistent Book wherein is reiteration. The skins shiver therefrom of those who fear their Lord; then their skins and their hearts relax at the remembrance of Allah. That is the guidance of Allah by which He guides whom He wills. And one whom Allah leaves astray - for him there is no guide
The parable of the slave, death and the two ends
After showing the Quran as the best statement, the surah gives parables, reminds all of death and compares the end of the liar and the truthful.
Allah presents an example: a slave owned by quarreling partners and another belonging exclusively to one man - are they equal in comparison? Praise be to Allah! But most of them do not know
- The parable: a slave owned by quarrelling partners, each pulling him his way, and another slave belonging to one master. They are not equal. Praise be to Allah, but most people do not know (39:29). The first is the mushrik who serves many gods; the second is the believer who serves one Lord.
- Death is certain for all: you will die and they will die (39:30), then you will dispute before your Lord on the Day of Resurrection (39:31).
- The worst wrongdoer is the one who lies about Allah and denies the truth when it comes; Hell is the home of such disbelievers (39:32).
- The one who brings the truth and the one who believes in it are the God-fearing; they will have what they wish with their Lord; Allah removes their worst deeds and rewards the best (39:33 to 35).
- Earlier nations who denied were seized by punishment from where they did not expect, and were disgraced in this life; the punishment of the Hereafter is greater (39:25 to 26).
And the one who has brought the truth and [they who] believed in it - those are the righteous (33) They will have whatever they desire with their Lord. That is the reward of the doers of good (34) That Allah may remove from them the worst of what they did and reward them their due for the best of what they used to do (35)
Death, sleep and intercession
Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought
- Allah takes the souls at the time of death, and the souls of those who have not died during their sleep (39:42).
- He keeps those for which He has decreed death and sends the others back for a fixed term (39:42). In this are signs for people who reflect.
- Sleep is therefore a small death, and waking is a small resurrection: it reminds us that life is in Allah's hand.
- Intercession: they took others besides Allah as intercessors; but they own nothing and have no sense. All intercession belongs to Allah (39:43 to 44).
- The Prophet (ﷺ) is told to pray: O Allah, Creator of the heavens and earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen, You will judge between Your servants in what they differed (39:46).
Do not despair of Allah's mercyاللہ کی رحمت سے مایوس نہ ہوںOften examined
39:53 is the best-known ayah of the surah. It is a call to sinners, and it is followed by the command to repent quickly.
Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful
- Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of Allah's mercy; Allah forgives all sins; He is the Forgiving, the Merciful (39:53).
- Return to your Lord and submit to Him before the punishment comes, when you will not be helped (39:54).
- Follow the best of what has been sent down to you before the punishment comes suddenly (39:55).
- A soul will say: how great is my regret that I neglected Allah's right; if only Allah had guided me; if only I could go back (39:56 to 58). Allah answers: My ayat came to you and you denied them in pride (39:59).
- Faces of those who lied about Allah will be black; Hell is the home of the proud. The God-fearing will be saved by their success; no evil touches them and they do not grieve (39:60 to 61).
The Day of Judgement and the two groupsقیامت کا دن اور دو گروہOften examined
The surah ends with the Day of Judgement: the trumpet, the court, the record, and the two groups that give the surah its name.
They have not appraised Allah with true appraisal, while the earth entirely will be [within] His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be folded in His right hand. Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him
- They did not appraise Allah as He deserves; on the Day of Resurrection the whole earth will be in His grip and the heavens folded in His right hand. He is exalted above their shirk (39:67).
- The trumpet is blown: all in the heavens and the earth fall dead except whom Allah wills; it is blown again and they stand looking on (39:68).
- The earth shines with the light of its Lord, the record is placed, the prophets and witnesses are brought, and judgement is made with truth; no one is wronged and every soul gets full reward (39:69 to 70).
- The disbelievers are driven to Hell in groups; its gates are opened and the keepers ask: did messengers not come to you reciting the ayat and warning you of this Day? They say: yes, but the word of punishment was proved true against the disbelievers (39:71). They are told to enter and stay for ever; evil is the home of the proud (39:72).
- The God-fearing are led to Paradise in groups; they find its gates open and its keepers say: peace be upon you, you have done well, enter and stay for ever (39:73).
- They say: praise to Allah who fulfilled His promise and made us inherit the land; we live in Paradise where we wish; excellent is the reward of workers (39:74).
- The surah ends: you will see the angels around the Throne glorifying their Lord with praise; judgement is made in truth and it is said: praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds (39:75).
And those who disbelieved will be driven to Hell in groups until, when they reach it, its gates are opened and its keepers will say, "Did there not come to you messengers from yourselves, reciting to you the verses of your Lord and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?" They will say, "Yes, but the word of punishment has come into effect upon the disbelievers
But those who feared their Lord will be driven to Paradise in groups until, when they reach it while its gates have been opened and its keepers say, "Peace be upon you; you have become pure; so enter it to abide eternally therein," [they will enter] (73) And they will say, "Praise to Allah, who has fulfilled for us His promise and made us inherit the earth [so] we may settle in Paradise wherever we will. And excellent is the reward of [righteous] workers (74) And you will see the angels surrounding the Throne, exalting [Allah] with praise of their Lord. And it will be judged between them in truth, and it will be said, "[All] praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds (75)
Rukus 1 to 2, ayat 1 to 21Rukus 1 and 2: sincere worship, signs and the patient
Ruku 1 (ayat 1 to 9): the Quran is from Allah (39:1); worship Him sincerely (39:2 to 3); Allah has no son and is the One, the Prevailing (39:4); signs in the heavens, the earth and the creation of man (39:5 to 6); Allah does not need His servants and does not approve disbelief, but is pleased with gratitude; no one bears another's burden (39:7); man forgets Allah after hardship (39:8); the night worshipper and the knowers (39:9).
If you disbelieve - indeed, Allah is Free from need of you. And He does not approve for His servants disbelief. And if you are grateful, He approves it for you; and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you about what you used to do. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts
Ruku 2 (ayat 10 to 21): Allah's call to the believers (39:10); the Prophet (ﷺ) is commanded to worship Allah alone and be the first of the Muslims (39:11 to 14); the losers lose themselves and their families (39:15); the canopies of fire (39:16); good news for those who listen to the best (39:17 to 18); the believers' chambers (39:19 to 20); the lesson of rain and crops (39:21).

Say, "O My servants who have believed, fear your Lord. For those who do good in this world is good, and the earth of Allah is spacious. Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account

Rukus 3 to 4, ayat 22 to 41Rukus 3 and 4: the best Book, the parable and the truth
Ruku 3 (ayat 22 to 31): the one whose breast is open to Islam is on a light (39:22); the Quran is the best statement (39:23); the disbeliever shielding his face from punishment (39:24); earlier nations were seized from where they did not expect (39:25 to 26); examples in the Quran, an Arabic Book without crookedness (39:27 to 28); the parable of the slave of many masters (39:29); all will die and then dispute before the Lord (39:30 to 31).
Ruku 4 (ayat 32 to 41): the worst wrongdoer is one who lies about Allah (39:32); the truthful and the believer (39:33 to 35); Allah is sufficient for His servant (39:36 to 37); the pagans admit Allah is the Creator (39:38); the Prophet (ﷺ) tells them to act as they will (39:39 to 40); the Book is sent down for people in truth, and guidance benefits only the one guided (39:41).
Is not Allah sufficient for His Servant [Prophet Muhammad]? And [yet], they threaten you with those [they worship] other than Him. And whoever Allah leaves astray - for him there is no guide
