Exam guide
امتحانی رہنمائی
This unit is the practical guide to the SSC-II Tarjama-tul-Quran paper: 50 marks, 2 hours 30 minutes, 15 surahs, 80 selected words and 27 long-answer topics. It sets out the paper pattern and the four SLOs, then shows how to answer each part: the 10 MCQs, the 2-mark short questions on facts, stories and teachings, the 3-mark ayah questions with six worked examples from the model paper, and the 8-mark long questions. A special section teaches how to recognise an unfamiliar printed ayah from its prophets, nations, key words and Makki themes, with a table of 29 likely ayat. It ends with a time plan, the board's honorific rules, common mistakes, a three-week revision plan and a last-night checklist. Because the syllabus begins with the 2027 annual exam, the only paper to learn from is the board's model paper.

The separate sheet
الگ شیٹ
- Section A is printed on its own sheet and collected after 15 minutes, so do not plan to come back to it later. Fill your roll number and version number first, exactly as on your admission slip and the question paper.
- Follow the instructions printed on the sheet for marking the answer. Use the pen or pencil the instructions name, mark one option per question and do not overwrite.
- Read all ten questions in the first minute and answer the sure ones first, then return to the rest.

How to get both marks
دونوں نمبر کیسے لیں
- Count the marks: 2 marks means two ticks. Write two clear points, one sentence each, or a fact and its reason.
- Answer the question that is asked, in its own words: 'reason for the name' means say where the name comes from, not the whole story of the surah.
- Add the ayah number when you remember it. If you are not sure of the number, write the fact without it rather than a wrong number.
- When the Quran does not give a single incident (most Makki surahs), say so and describe the situation of Makkah that the surah answers. This is a correct answer for shan-e-nuzul.
Worked examples from the model paper
ماڈل پیپر سے حل شدہ مثالیں
Q. What is the reason for the name of Surah Al-Hijr? (2 marks)
سوال: سورۃ الحجر کی وجہِ تسمیہ لکھیں۔ (2 نمبر)
- The surah is named after Al-Hijr, the land of the people of Thamud, «اَصْحٰبُ الْحِجْرِ», between Madinah and Syria.
- They denied the messengers and were destroyed, and their story is mentioned in 15:80 to 84.
- یہ سورت الحجر کے نام پر ہے، جو قومِ ثمود کی سرزمین تھی، «اَصْحٰبُ الْحِجْرِ»، مدینہ اور شام کے درمیان۔
- انہوں نے رسولوں کو جھٹلایا اور ہلاک ہوئے، ان کا ذکر 15:80 تا 84 میں ہے۔
Q. Write the occasion of revelation (shan-e-nuzul) of Surah Al-An'am. (2 marks)
سوال: سورۃ الانعام کا شانِ نزول لکھیں۔ (2 نمبر)
- It was revealed in Makkah in the late Makki period (about the 12th year of prophethood, in Maududi's view), mostly at one time. There is no single incident: it answers the Quraish, who denied the Prophet (ﷺ) and demanded angels and miracles (6:8 to 9, 6:37, 6:109 to 111).
- The surah answers them with tawhid, risalah and akhirah, and corrects their pagan customs about cattle and crops (6:136 to 145).
Q. Write the occasion of revelation (shan-e-nuzul) of Surah Al-A'raf. (2 marks)
سوال: سورۃ الاعراف کا شانِ نزول لکھیں۔ (2 نمبر)
- It is a late Makki surah of the same period as Al-An'am, when the Quraish's denial and hostility had grown strong. It has no single incident of revelation.
- It warns them by the fate of Nuh, Hud, Salih, Lut and Shu'aib (AS) and their peoples (7:59 to 93), and by Hazrat Musa (AS) and Pharaoh, and calls them to follow the unlettered Prophet (7:157). It is named after «الاعراف», the heights (7:46).
Q. What sign did the people of Thamud demand from Hazrat Salih (AS)? (2 marks)
سوال: قومِ ثمود نے حضرت صالح علیہ السلام سے کیا نشانی طلب کی تھی؟ (2 نمبر)
- They asked for a clear sign to prove he was a messenger. Allah sent the she-camel of Allah as the sign; commentators say it came out of a rock (7:73, 11:64).
- The condition: let her eat on Allah's earth and do not harm her. They hamstrung her and were seized (7:73 to 78).
Q. What did Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) pray for Makkah? (2 marks)
سوال: حضرت ابراہیم علیہ السلام نے مکہ مکرمہ کے لیے کیا دعا مانگی تھی؟ (2 نمبر)
- That Allah make the city safe (14:35), and keep him and his sons away from worshipping idols.
- That the people he settled in the uncultivated valley by the Sacred House establish prayer, that hearts incline to them and that they be provided with fruits so that they give thanks (14:37).
- کہ اللہ اس شہر کو امن کا شہر بنا دے (14:35)، اور اسے اور اس کے بیٹوں کو بت پرستی سے بچائے۔
- کہ جن لوگوں کو اس نے بے آب و گیاہ وادی میں بیت المحرم کے پاس بسایا وہ نماز قائم کریں، لوگوں کے دل ان کی طرف مائل ہوں اور انہیں پھلوں کا رزق ملے تاکہ وہ شکر کریں (14:37)۔
Q. What good news did the angels on their way to the people of Lut give Hazrat Ibrahim (AS)? (2 marks)
سوال: قومِ لوط کی طرف آنے والے فرشتوں نے حضرت ابراہیم علیہ السلام کو کیا خوشخبری دی؟ (2 نمبر)
- The good news of a son, Ishaq (AS), and after Ishaq, of Yaqub (AS), a grandson (11:71).
- His wife laughed at the news (11:71); then the angels told him they were sent to the people of Lut (11:69 to 70).
- بیٹے حضرت اسحاق علیہ السلام کی خوشخبری، اور اسحاق کے بعد پوتے حضرت یعقوب علیہ السلام کی (11:71)۔
- اس کی بیوی یہ سن کر ہنس پڑیں (11:71)؛ پھر فرشتوں نے بتایا کہ وہ قومِ لوط کی طرف بھیجے گئے ہیں (11:69 تا 70)۔
Q. What guidance is given in Surah Al-Isra about the rights of parents? (2 marks)
سوال: سورۃ اسراء (بنی اسرائیل) میں والدین کے حقوق کے بارے میں کیا ہدایات دی گئی ہیں؟ (2 نمبر)
- Kindness to them comes right after worship of Allah alone (17:23).
- In their old age do not say even «اُفّ» to them, do not repel them, speak a noble word and lower to them the wing of humility, praying «رَبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيٰنِيْ صَغِيْرًا» (17:23 to 24).
Q. Surah Al-Mu'minun teaches us to avoid vain things: give one example. (2 marks)
سوال: سورۃ المؤمنون میں جن فضول کاموں سے بچنے کی تعلیم ہے ان کی ایک مثال لکھیں۔ (2 نمبر)
- The believers turn away from «اللغو», every vain and useless word or act (23:3); an example is idle talk that serves no purpose.
- They are also humble in prayer, they pay zakat and they guard their trusts (23:1 to 9).
- مومن «اللغو» یعنی ہر فضول اور بے فائدہ بات یا کام سے منہ موڑ لیتے ہیں (23:3)؛ مثال کے طور پر وہ بے مقصد گفتگو جس کا کوئی فائدہ نہ ہو۔
- وہ نماز میں عاجزی اختیار کرتے ہیں، زکوٰۃ دیتے ہیں اور امانتوں کی حفاظت کرتے ہیں (23:1 تا 9)۔
Q. Why does Surah Ghafir urge us to look at the ruins of past nations? (2 marks)
سوال: سورۃ غافر میں گزشتہ قوموں کے آثار دیکھنے کی ترغیب کیوں دی گئی ہے؟ (2 نمبر)
- To take a lesson: those before were stronger and left greater marks on the land, yet Allah seized them for their sins and they had no protector from Allah (40:21, 40:82).
- So the Quraish should not trust in their power and wealth: sin and denial of the messengers bring ruin.
Q. In Surah Al-Kahf, which opinions are given about the number of the People of the Cave? (2 marks)
سوال: سورۃ الکہف میں غار والوں کی تعداد کے بارے میں کون سی آراء بیان ہوئی ہیں؟ (2 نمبر)
- Three opinions: three, the fourth being their dog; five, the sixth being their dog; seven, the eighth being their dog (18:22).
- The Quran calls the opinion of five 'guessing at the unseen' and tells the Prophet (ﷺ) to say: my Lord knows best their number, only a few know it (18:22). The number does not matter; the lesson does.

Often examined
Method: five steps
طریقہ: پانچ مراحل
- Read the Urdu translation first, slowly, once. It is printed for you: the translation is your main source.
- Read the sub-questions and underline the key word in each (which blessings, what cause, what rewards, what warning).
- Find the answer words in the translation and write them in your own sentence. Answer in the ayah's own terms first.
- Add the context (the surah, the story, the reference) only if the question asks for it, or as one short line when it clearly earns the mark.
- Match the length to the marks: 1 mark is one fact, 2 marks are two facts. Label the parts (a), (b), (c) as in the paper.

Have they not seen how many generations We destroyed before them which We had established upon the earth as We have not established you? And We sent [rain from] the sky upon them in showers and made rivers flow beneath them; then We destroyed them for their sins and brought forth after them a generation of others
(a) Write the blessings Allah gave the past nations. (2 marks) From the translation: He established them on the earth with a power He has not given you, He sent rain on them in showers from the sky, and made rivers flow beneath them. Two blessings are enough for 2 marks; the third is a bonus.
(الف) گزشتہ اقوام پر اللہ کے انعامات لکھیں۔ (2 نمبر) ترجمے سے: انہیں زمین میں ایسا اقتدار دیا جو تمہیں نہیں دیا، ان پر آسمان سے موسلا دھار بارش برسائی، اور ان کے نیچے سے نہریں بہائیں۔ 2 نمبر کے لیے دو انعامات کافی ہیں؛ تیسرا زائد ہے۔
(b) What was the cause of the destruction of the past nations? (1 mark) Their sins: Allah destroyed them for their sins and raised another generation after them.
(ب) سابقہ اقوام کی ہلاکت کا سبب کیا تھا؟ (1 نمبر) ان کے گناہ: اللہ نے ان کے گناہوں کی وجہ سے انہیں ہلاک کیا اور ان کے بعد دوسری نسل اٹھائی۔

(b) Write the wisdom of this promise. (1 mark) So that he be a sign for those who come after him, a lesson that even a proud ruler is helpless.
(ب) مذکورہ وعدے کی حکمت لکھیں۔ (1 نمبر) تاکہ وہ بعد کے لوگوں کے لیے نشانِ عبرت بنے، کہ بڑے سے بڑا متکبر حکمران بھی بے بس ہے۔
(c) Write the attitude of most people towards Allah's signs. (1 mark) Many people are heedless (غافل) of Our signs.
(ج) اللہ کی نشانیوں کے بارے میں لوگوں کی اکثریت کا رویہ لکھیں۔ (1 نمبر) بہت سے لوگ ہماری نشانیوں سے غفلت برتتے ہیں۔
Example 4: Hud 3 (Q.2 (c)(ii) OR)

(a) What are the people urged to do? (1 mark) To seek forgiveness of their Lord and to turn to Him in repentance.

(c) What warning is given for turning away from them? (1 mark) The punishment of a great Day (the Day of Judgement).
(ج) روگردانی پر کیا وعید ہے؟ (1 نمبر) ایک بڑے دن (قیامت) کے عذاب کا ڈر۔
Example 5: Ibrahim 1 (Q.2 (c)(iii))
مثال 5: ابراہیم 1 (سوال 2 (ج)(iii))
ا ل ر اے محمدؐ، یہ ایک کتاب ہے جس کو ہم نے تمہاری طرف نازل کیا ہے تاکہ تم لوگوں کو تاریکیوں سے نکال کر روشنی میں لاؤ، ان کے رب کی توفیق سے، اُس خدا کے راستے پر جو زبردست اور اپنی ذات میں آپ محمود ہے
Alif, Lam, Ra. [This is] a Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that you might bring mankind out of darknesses into the light by permission of their Lord - to the path of the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy
(a) Write the purpose of the revelation of the Quran. (1 mark) To bring mankind out of the darknesses (of disbelief and ignorance) into the light (of faith), by the permission of their Lord.
(الف) نزولِ قرآن مجید کا مقصد لکھیں۔ (1 نمبر) لوگوں کو تاریکیوں (کفر اور جہالت) سے نکال کر روشنی (ایمان) میں لانا، ان کے رب کی توفیق سے۔

Example 6: Ash-Shura 37 to 38 (Q.2 (c)(iii) OR)
And those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, and when they are angry, they forgive (37) And those who have responded to their lord and established prayer and whose affair is [determined by] consultation among themselves, and from what We have provided them, they spend (38)
Identify the praiseworthy deeds described in these ayat and the blameworthy deeds (to be avoided). (3 marks) One question for 3 marks, so make two short lists. Praiseworthy: they forgive when angry; they respond to their Lord; they establish prayer; they decide their affairs by mutual consultation; they spend from what Allah gave them. To be avoided: the major sins and the indecencies (which they avoid). Five clear deeds and the two to avoid earn the marks.
Often examined
Plan in 2 minutes
دو منٹ میں منصوبہ
- Read both choices of Q.3 and Q.4 and mark the one you know better. Choose by how many points and ayah numbers you can recall, not by the title.
- Read the split. For 4+4 write two headings, for example the story (4) and the teachings (4), or the deeds (4) and the consequences (4).
- Under each heading list the points in the order of the surah, with the ayah numbers. Aim for about four points of one or two lines each under each heading.
- Finish with one line of guidance tied to today. Keep 2 minutes for checking.

| Part | What to write | Marks it earns |
|---|---|---|
| First half (4) | The story or the list asked for: the prophet, his people, what he called them to, their reply, the end; or the four items with ayah numbers | About 1 mark per clear point |
| Second half (4) | The teachings, lessons, demands or consequences, each tied to an ayah or to the story | About 1 mark per lesson |
| One-line close | What this means for us today | Keeps the answer complete |
- Use the part labels printed in the paper ((a), (b)) as your headings.
- Give each point its own line and number. Examiners award marks per point, and a numbered list is easy to count.
- Write the meaning of each ayah in your own words and give the reference, for example (Hud 11:42); this is quicker and safer than copying Arabic.

Which topics are likely OR choices
کون سے مضامین «یا» کے جوڑے بن سکتے ہیں
The framework says both choices of an OR must be of the same difficulty. The model paper joined topics of the same kind: Hud (9) with Al-A'raf (5), both stories of earlier nations, and Ibrahim (12) with An-Nahl (15), both about Allah's favours and our duty. Only one paper exists, so the pairs below are a guide, not a promise: prepare every topic.

The totals: 5 + 55 + 60 + 15 = 135 minutes. If you run late, take the time from the final check, never from Section C, since an unfinished 8-mark answer costs the most.
کل: 5 + 55 + 60 + 15 = 135 منٹ۔ دیر ہو جائے تو وقت آخری جانچ سے لیں، حصہ سوم سے کبھی نہیں، کیونکہ 8 نمبر کا ادھورا جواب سب سے مہنگا پڑتا ہے۔
Presentation
پیشکش
- Write Sections B and C in the order of the paper, and copy the question number exactly (Q.2 (a)(i), (c)(iii)) on the answer sheet, with the OR you chose clearly marked.
- Do not answer both choices of an OR. Write one, and the examiner marks one. If you write both, you only lose time.
- Write each answer part under its own label ((a), (b), (c)). Number the points. Leave a line between questions.
- Write the reference with each point: surah name and ayah number.
- Write the answer in Urdu or English, not mixed within a point. Names of prophets, nations and surahs are written carefully and in full: Hud and Aad, Salih and Thamud, Shu'aib and Madyan.
- Write the word meanings (Section B (b)) as one line each next to the numbered word. One exact word for 1 mark.
The board's rules on honorifics
تعظیمی عبارات کے بورڈ کے اصول
The framework lists the rules the board follows in its own papers. Follow them in your answers. They cost a few seconds and show care.
فریم ورک میں وہ اصول درج ہیں جن پر بورڈ اپنے پرچوں میں عمل کرتا ہے۔ اپنے جوابات میں بھی ان پر عمل کریں۔ ان میں چند سیکنڈ لگتے ہیں اور ادب ظاہر ہوتا ہے۔

Common mistakes that lose marks
عام غلطیاں جن سے نمبر کٹتے ہیں
- Skipping the OR rule: answering both, or answering neither choice.
- Writing a long story for a 2-mark question, then running out of time for the long questions.
- Writing three or four points where two are asked, with one of them wrong.
- Not reading the translation of the printed ayah and answering from memory of another ayah.
- Mixing up the stories: giving the Thamud punishment of Hud (the blast) in an Al-A'raf answer (the earthquake), or Hazrat Nuh's (AS) son in the wrong surah.
- Mixing the prophets and the nations: Hud with Thamud, or Salih with Aad.
- No references. A correct point without a surah or ayah number is worth less than one with it.
- Writing the guidance part of a long answer too generally ('we should obey Islam'): tie it to the topic and to today.
- Writing a different meaning for a word from the 80, instead of the board's meaning, or confusing two similar words.
- Changing a bubble or overwriting on the Section A sheet, or marking two options in one row.
- Leaving the last long answer unfinished. Better a complete 6-point answer than 3 perfect points.

In each surah day, read the 'high' sections first: the introduction, the exam points, the topic sections that are long topics, and the recognising-ayat section. The medium sections (ruku-by-ruku notes) come last, if time allows.
ہر سورت کے دن «اہم» حصے پہلے پڑھیں: تعارف، امتحانی نکات، وہ موضوعاتی حصے جو طویل مضامین ہیں، اور آیات کی پہچان۔ درمیانی اہمیت والے حصے (رکوع وار نوٹس) آخر میں، اگر وقت ہو۔

- 45 منٹ نئی سورت: یونٹ کا تعارف، امتحانی نکات اور آیات کی پہچان۔

Recognising the ayatآیات کی پہچانOften examined
Five steps to place an ayah
آیت کو پہچاننے کے پانچ مراحل
- Read the translation first, slowly. If the surah name and ayah number are printed with it, use them: you have the surah. If not, go on.
- Look for names of prophets, nations and places (the first table below).
- Look for key words and images that belong to one surah (the second table).
- Decide the theme: tawhid, risalah, akhirah, a story, a command, a quality or a prayer. The Makki themes narrow the surah to a few.
- Answer the sub-questions from the ayah's own words, then add the context only if you are sure of it.

The Makki themes
مکی موضوعات
All 15 surahs are Makki (Ar-Ra'd in the common view), so an unfamiliar ayah usually belongs to one of four themes. Naming the theme is half the answer.
پندرہوں سورتیں مکی ہیں (الرعد معروف رائے میں)، اس لیے اجنبی آیت عموماً چار موضوعات میں سے کسی ایک سے ہوتی ہے۔ موضوع بتا دینا آدھا جواب ہے۔
- Tawhid: Allah's power in creation, His attributes, no partner, the signs in the sky and the earth (6:59, 10:3, 13:2, 42:11). Sub-questions ask for the attributes or the signs.
- Risalah: the Quran's purpose, the Prophet (ﷺ) as a human messenger, the earlier messengers and the denial they met (14:1, 7:35, 17:90 to 93). Sub-questions ask the duty of the messenger, the purpose, or the demands.
- Akhirah: the Day of Judgement, reward and punishment, the groups, no bearer bears another's burden (6:164, 39:71 to 75, 40:60). Sub-questions ask the reward, the punishment, or who will be saved.
- Stories and warnings: the prophets and the nations (6:6, 10:92, 40:21). Sub-questions ask the cause of the ruin or the lesson.
- A fifth group, rarer: conduct and character (7:31, 16:90, 17:23 to 24, 42:37 to 38). Sub-questions ask you to list the commands or the qualities.
Address words help too: «يٰبَنِيْٓ اٰدَمَ» (children of Adam) is the call of Al-A'raf (7:26, 7:31, 7:35); «يٰٓاَيُّهَا النَّاسُ» (O mankind) is common in Yunus (10:57); «يٰعِبَادِيَ» (O My servants) is the call of Az-Zumar (39:53); «قُلْ» (say) opens many answers to the Quraish, as in Al-An'am (6:151, 6:162).
If you cannot place the ayah
اگر آیت کو جگہ نہ دے سکیں
- Decide what the sub-question asks for: a list, a reason, a reward, a warning, an attribute. These are the words you must find in the translation.
- Copy the answer from the translation in your own words. Most sub-questions of the model paper (6:6, 10:92, 11:3, 14:1) were answered fully from the printed ayah.
- If the question asks for something the translation does not say (a context, a story, an occasion), write the general Makki truth you are sure of, for example that the Quraish denied the message, rather than a guess at an incident.
- Never leave a part blank: a partial answer from the ayah earns something.
