Why is it called Al-Fath?

The first ayah says: We have given you a clear conquest («فَتْحًا مُّبِينًا»). The word «فتح» means victory or opening, and the surah is named after it. The victory meant here is the Treaty of Hudaybiyah, which opened the way to the conquest of Makkah.

Surah Al-Fath 48:1

Indeed, We have given you, [O Muhammad], a clear conquest

Period and occasion of revelation

In Dhul-Qa'dah 6 AH the Prophet (ﷺ) set out from Madinah for umrah with about 1,400 Companions, in the dress of ihram and with the sacrificial animals. The Quraish of Makkah stopped them at Hudaybiyah and, after talks, a treaty was agreed under which the Muslims returned that year without performing umrah. Many Companions were deeply troubled by its terms. On the way back the surah was revealed and declared that treaty a clear victory. The details are in the section on the Treaty of Hudaybiyah.

48:1 to 3, 18 to 27The Treaty of Hudaybiyah, 6 AHصلحِ حدیبیہ، 6 ہجریOften examined

Background

  • In 6 AH the Prophet (ﷺ) saw in a dream that he entered the Masjid al-Haram with his Companions (see 48:27).
  • In Dhul-Qa'dah he set out for umrah with about 1,400 Companions, in ihram, with sacrificial animals and only the swords that travellers carry, in their sheaths.
  • The Quraish resolved to stop them. The Muslims halted at Hudaybiyah, near Makkah.
  • The Prophet (ﷺ) sent Hazrat Uthman (RA) as his envoy. A rumour spread that he had been killed, and the Companions then pledged under a tree (Bay'at ar-Ridwan). The rumour proved false and the Quraish sent Suhayl bin Amr to make a treaty.

Terms of the treaty

  • There would be no war between the two sides for ten years.
  • The Muslims would go back that year and return the next year for umrah, staying three days only, with their swords in sheaths.
  • A man from Quraish who came to the Prophet (ﷺ) without his guardian's permission would be returned, but a Muslim who went to the Quraish would not be returned.
  • Any Arab tribe was free to join either side as an ally.

The Companions found these terms hard, especially the return of the Makkans who accepted Islam. Hazrat Umar (RA) asked the Prophet (ﷺ) whether they were not on the truth, and the Prophet (ﷺ) answered that he was the servant and Messenger of Allah and would not go against His command (Sahih Bukhari). The Prophet (ﷺ) accepted the terms, told the Companions to sacrifice their animals and shave their heads at Hudaybiyah, and they obeyed.

Why is it called a clear victory?

  • It brought peace, and the Muslims were free from the danger of the Quraish for a time. The Quraish accepted the Muslims as an equal power for the first time.
  • In the calm, Islam spread quickly. The Prophet (ﷺ) sent letters to kings and rulers, and people entered Islam in great numbers in the next two years.
  • The Muslims were able to deal with Khaybar soon after, and the promised booty came (48:19 to 20).
  • The way was opened for the conquest of Makkah in 8 AH, after the Quraish and their allies broke the treaty, and the umrah of the next year (7 AH) was performed in peace.

Surah Al-Fath 48:18

Certainly was Allah pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you, [O Muhammad], under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquillity upon them and rewarded them with an imminent conquest

What happened

When the rumour of the martyrdom of Hazrat Uthman (RA) reached the camp, the Prophet (ﷺ) sat under a tree and took a pledge from the Companions to stand and fight to the end and not to flee. About 1,400 pledged. The Prophet (ﷺ) put one hand over the other for Hazrat Uthman (RA), who was absent.

Why is it called Bay'at ar-Ridwan?

«رِضْوَان» means pleasure. In 48:18 Allah declares that He was pleased with the believers when they pledged under the tree. So the pledge is called Bay'at ar-Ridwan, or Bay'at ash-Shajarah, the pledge of the tree.

What the Quran says about it

  • Those who pledge to the Prophet (ﷺ) are in fact pledging to Allah; the hand of Allah is over their hands. Whoever breaks the pledge harms only himself, and whoever fulfils it will receive a great reward (48:10).
  • Allah was pleased with the believers who pledged under the tree, He knew what was in their hearts, sent down tranquillity upon them and rewarded them with a near victory (48:18).
  • He promised them much booty (48:19), commonly understood to be the booty of Khaybar (48:20).
Surah Al-Fath 48:10

Indeed, those who pledge allegiance to you, [O Muhammad] - they are actually pledging allegiance to Allah. The hand of Allah is over their hands. So he who breaks his word only breaks it to the detriment of himself. And he who fulfills that which he has promised Allah - He will give him a great reward

Who stayed behind

When the Prophet (ﷺ) set out for Makkah, some Bedouin tribes around Madinah were invited to come with him but did not. They feared a clash with the Quraish and thought the Muslims would not return (48:12).

Surah Al-Fath 48:11

Those who remained behind of the bedouins will say to you, "Our properties and our families occupied us, so ask forgiveness for us." They say with their tongues what is not within their hearts. Say, "Then who could prevent Allah at all if He intended for you harm or intended for you benefit? Rather, ever is Allah, with what you do, Acquainted

  • Their excuse: our properties and families kept us busy, so ask forgiveness for us (48:11). Allah says they speak with their tongues what is not in their hearts.
  • The real reason: they thought the Messenger and the believers would never return to their families (48:12). Allah has prepared a blaze for the disbelievers (48:13).
  • When the Muslims later set out for booty (Khaybar), they said: let us follow you. They were told they could never follow, as Allah had already said (48:15).
  • They were told they would be called to face a people of great military might; if they obey they will be rewarded, and if they turn away as before they will be punished (48:16).

Those excused (48:17)

Surah Al-Fath 48:17

There is not upon the blind any guilt or upon the lame any guilt or upon the ill any guilt [for remaining behind]. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger - He will admit him to gardens beneath which rivers flow; but whoever turns away - He will punish him with a painful punishment

  • There is no blame on the blind, the lame or the sick if they stay behind from jihad.
  • Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) will be admitted to gardens beneath which rivers flow.
  • Whoever turns away will be punished with a painful punishment.

Surah Al-Fath 48:27

Certainly has Allah showed to His Messenger the vision in truth. You will surely enter al-Masjid al-Haram, if Allah wills, in safety, with your heads shaved and [hair] shortened, not fearing [anyone]. He knew what you did not know and has arranged before that a conquest near [at hand]

Allah says He showed His Messenger the vision in truth: the believers would enter the Masjid al-Haram in safety, with heads shaved or hair cut short, fearing no one. He knew what the Muslims did not know and arranged a near conquest before it.

Why it caused doubt

The Companions had understood that they would enter Makkah that very year, so when they were turned back at Hudaybiyah some were troubled. Hazrat Umar (RA) asked and the Prophet (ﷺ) replied that he had not said that it would be that year (Sahih Bukhari). The ayah settles the matter: the vision was true, but the time was Allah's choice.

  • In Dhul-Qa'dah 7 AH the Prophet (ﷺ) and the Companions performed the umrah in peace, as the treaty allowed (the umrah of making up, «عمرة القضاء»).
  • The 'near conquest' before it was the victory of Khaybar, in the common view; the full conquest of Makkah came in 8 AH.
Surah Al-Fath 48:28

It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion. And sufficient is Allah as Witness

The next ayah says that Allah sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to make it prevail over every other religion.

Surah Al-Fath 48:29

Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; and those with him are forceful against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating [in prayer], seeking bounty from Allah and [His] pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration. That is their description in the Torah. And their description in the Gospel is as a plant which produces its offshoots and strengthens them so they grow firm and stand upon their stalks, delighting the sowers - so that Allah may enrage by them the disbelievers. Allah has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds among them forgiveness and a great reward

Rukus 1 to 2, ayat 1 to 17Rukus 1 to 2: the clear victory and the pledge

Ruku 1: A clear victory (48:1 to 10)

Allah declares a clear victory for the Prophet (ﷺ) and says it is for the forgiveness of his shortcomings, the completion of His favour, guidance to a straight path and a mighty help (48:1 to 3). He sent tranquillity into the hearts of the believers, promised them gardens and warned the hypocrites and polytheists (48:4 to 7). The Prophet (ﷺ) is a witness, a bringer of good tidings and a warner (48:8 to 9), and those who pledge to him pledge to Allah (48:10).

Surah Al-Fath 48:1–2

Indeed, We have given you, [O Muhammad], a clear conquest (1) That Allah may forgive for you what preceded of your sin and what will follow and complete His favor upon you and guide you to a straight path (2)

Ruku 2: The ones who stayed behind (48:11 to 17)

The Bedouins who stayed behind make excuses and are told what lies behind them (48:11 to 14). They ask to join the Khaybar campaign for booty and are refused (48:15), but are offered a chance to prove themselves against a strong people (48:16). The ruku ends with the excuse of the blind, lame and sick (48:17).

Rukus 3 to 4, ayat 18 to 29Rukus 3 to 4: Ridwan, Makkah and the Companions

Ruku 3: The pledge and the reasons for the treaty (48:18 to 26)

Allah declares that He was pleased with the believers who pledged under the tree and rewarded them with a near victory and much booty (48:18 to 21). Had the Quraish fought, they would have fled (48:22 to 23). Allah held back the hands of both sides near Makkah (48:24), and the Muslims were stopped from entering Makkah partly because of believing men and women hidden among the Makkans (48:25). The Quraish showed the pride of the days of ignorance, but Allah sent His tranquillity and kept the believers to the word of righteousness (48:26).

Surah Al-Fath 48:18

Certainly was Allah pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you, [O Muhammad], under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquillity upon them and rewarded them with an imminent conquest

Ruku 4: The vision and the Companions (48:27 to 29)

The vision of entering the Masjid al-Haram is confirmed (48:27), the religion of truth will prevail over all religions (48:28), and the surah ends with the praise of the Prophet (ﷺ) and his Companions (48:29).
