Surah As-Saff

Class 12 Tarjama-tul-Quran, unit 12

Surah As-Saff is the 61st surah of the Quran, a Madani surah of 14 ayat and 2 rukus in para 28; it is one of the musabbihat, the surahs that begin with the glorification of Allah. It was revealed in the period of the Muslims' struggle in Madinah, according to many commentators around the time of Uhud. It condemns saying what one does not do, praises believers who fight in His way in rows like a solid structure, reminds of the stubbornness of the followers of Hazrat Musa (AS) and Hazrat Isa (AS) (who gave the good news of Ahmad), promises that Allah's light will be completed and the true religion will prevail, offers the believers a profitable trade and calls them to be helpers of Allah. FBISE asks about the principle of teamwork (model paper Q.2 (a)(v)), 61:2 to 3, 61:4, 61:6 and 61:10 to 14.

Why is it called As-Saff?

Ayah 4 says that Allah loves those who fight in His way in a row («صَفًّا») as if they were a solid structure. The surah is named after this word «صف», which means a row or rank, and is the key idea of the surah: order, discipline and unity.

Surah As-Saff 61:4

Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a row as though they are a [single] structure joined firmly

Period and occasion of revelation

Hazrat Abdullah bin Salam (RA) reports that some Companions sat together and said: if we knew which deed is most beloved to Allah we would do it. Then this surah was revealed (Tirmidhi, Ahmad). Its ayat 2 to 3 are understood by the commentators to refer to those who made big claims about fighting and then did not stand firm, which was seen at Uhud; the surah therefore comes from the period of the early battles in Madinah.

Central theme and main topics

The central theme is striving for Allah's religion with sincerity and unity: the believer's word must match his deed, he must stand with his brothers like a solid wall, and he must give his wealth and life, for Allah will complete His light and make His religion prevail.

  • Saying what you do not do is hateful to Allah (61:2 to 3)
  • Fighting in rows like a solid structure (61:4)
  • Hazrat Musa (AS) and his people; Hazrat Isa (AS) and the good news of Ahmad (61:5 to 7)
  • The light of Allah and the prevailing of the true religion (61:8 to 9)
  • The profitable trade and its rewards (61:10 to 13)
  • Be helpers of Allah like the disciples of Hazrat Isa (AS) (61:14)

Saying what you do not do (61:2 to 3)جو کہو وہ کرو نہیں (61:2 تا 3)Often examined

Surah As-Saff 61:2–3

O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do (2) Great is hatred in the sight of Allah that you say what you do not do (3)

Allah addresses the believers: why do you say what you do not do? It is greatly hateful in the sight of Allah that you say what you do not do. The words are about the gap between a claim and action, especially promises of courage and sacrifice made and not kept.

Points

نکات

  1. The ayah is addressed to those who believe, to remind them that faith needs action.
  2. Allah uses the strong word «مَقْتًا», great hatred or anger, for this fault.
  3. The occasion: the Companions' wish to know the best deed, and the failure of some who claimed to fight and did not stand firm (Tirmidhi; commentators).

Unity like a solid structure: the principle of teamwork (61:4)سیسہ پلائی ہوئی دیوار کی طرح اتحاد: ٹیم ورک کا اصول (61:4)Often examined

Surah As-Saff 61:4

Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a row as though they are a [single] structure joined firmly

Allah says that He loves those who fight in His cause in a row, as if they were a «بُنْيَانٌ مَّرْصُوْصٌ», a structure joined firmly, like a wall whose bricks are sealed together with lead. This is the Quran's principle of successful teamwork.

The principle in points

  1. Unity and organisation: the team stands in a row, shoulder to shoulder, with no gaps, as one body (the word «
  2. Discipline and order: each member keeps his place and follows the command, as the bricks of a wall each take their place.
  3. A common aim for Allah's sake: they fight «فِيْ سَبِيْلِهِ», in His way, not for personal gain or fame.
  4. Mutual support: each member strengthens the other, and the strength of the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
  5. Sincere members: words must match deeds (61:2 to 3), otherwise the structure has weak places.

The followers of Hazrat Musa (AS) and the good news of Ahmad (61:5 to 7)حضرت موسیٰ علیہ السلام کی قوم اور احمد ﷺ کی بشارت (61:5 تا 7)Often examined

After the call to unity the surah gives examples of earlier communities who did not act on what they knew. Hazrat Musa (AS) said to his people: why do you hurt me when you know that I am Allah's messenger to you? When they turned away, Allah turned their hearts away, for Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient (61:5).

The good news of Ahmad

  1. Hazrat Isa (AS) told the Children of Israel that he was Allah's messenger, confirming the Torah that came before him.
  2. He gave the good news of a messenger who would come after him, whose name is Ahmad.
  3. Ahmad is the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Hazrat Jubair bin Mut'im (RA) reports that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: I am Muhammad, I am Ahmad, I am al-Mahi through whom Allah removes disbelief, I am al-Hashir, and I am al-Aqib (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
  4. When he came to them with clear proofs, they said: this is obvious magic (61:6). Allah then asks: who is more unjust than one who invents lies about Allah while being invited to Islam (61:7)? The words «وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ» (and who is more unjust) are one of the 80 selected words.

The light of Allah and the prevailing of the religion (61:8 to 9)اللہ کا نور اور دین کا غلبہ (61:8 تا 9)Often examined

Surah As-Saff 61:8–9

They want to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah will perfect His light, although the disbelievers dislike it (8) It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion, although those who associate others with Allah dislike it (9)

  1. The enemies want to put out the light of Allah (the Quran and Islam) with their mouths, that is, with their talk and plots, as one tries to blow out a lamp (61:8). The word «لِيُطْفِـُٔوْا» means to extinguish.
  2. Allah will complete His light even if the disbelievers dislike it (61:8).
  3. It is He who sent His Messenger (ﷺ) with guidance and the religion of truth to make it prevail over all religion, though the polytheists dislike it (61:9).

The Prophet (ﷺ) said that Allah will complete this matter until a rider travels from San'a to Hadramawt fearing none but Allah (Sahih Bukhari, from Hazrat Khabbab bin al-Aratt (RA)). The duty of the believers is to strive for this prevailing with sincerity, unity, wealth and life, as the next ayat explain.

O you who have believed, shall I guide you to a transaction that will save you from a painful punishment (10) [It is that] you believe in Allah and His Messenger and strive in the cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives. That is best for you, if you should know (11) He will forgive for you your sins and admit you to gardens beneath which rivers flow and pleasant dwellings in gardens of perpetual residence. That is the great attainment (12)

Allah asks: shall I guide you to a trade that will save you from a painful punishment? The «تِجَارَة» (trade) here is a bargain in which the believer gives faith and effort and receives Paradise.

Surah As-Saff 61:14

O you who have believed, be supporters of Allah, as when Jesus, the son of Mary, said to the disciples, "Who are my supporters for Allah?" The disciples said, "We are supporters of Allah." And a faction of the Children of Israel believed and a faction disbelieved. So We supported those who believed against their enemy, and they became dominant

  1. The believers are called to be «أَنْصَارَ اللّٰهِ», helpers of Allah, as the disciples («حَوَارِيُّوْنَ») of Hazrat Isa (AS) were.
  2. Hazrat Isa (AS) asked: who will be my helpers towards Allah? The disciples answered: we are Allah's helpers.
  3. A group of the Children of Israel believed and a group disbelieved; Allah supported the believers against their enemy and they became dominant.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said that every prophet has a disciple («حَوَارِي») and his own disciple is Zubair (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, from Hazrat Jabir (RA)). The Ansar of Madinah («انصار», helpers) are the best example of this ayah in the Muslim community.

Surah As-Saff 61:2–3
