Surah Al-Munafiqun
Surah Al-Munafiqun is the 63rd surah of the Quran, a Madani surah of 11 ayat and 2 rukus in para 28. It was revealed during or just after the campaign against Banu al-Mustaliq (5 or 6 AH), when Abdullah bin Ubayy, the chief of the hypocrites, said that the more honoured would expel the more humble from Madinah, and Hazrat Zaid bin Arqam (RA) reported his words; the surah confirmed Zaid's report. It unmasks the hypocrites: false testimony, oaths as a shield, a pleasing appearance with an empty heart, arrogance and hatred of the believers. The second ruku warns the believers not to let wealth and children divert them from the remembrance of Allah and to spend before death comes. FBISE asks about the background, the signs of the hypocrites and the ayat 63:1, 63:4, 63:8, 63:9 to 11.

Why is it called Al-Munafiqun?
The surah begins with «إِذَا جَاءَكَ الْمُنَافِقُوْنَ», when the hypocrites come to you. The whole surah is about them, so it takes its name from this word in 63:1.
When the hypocrites come to you, [O Muhammad], they say, "We testify that you are the Messenger of Allah." And Allah knows that you are His Messenger, and Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars
Central theme and main topics
The central theme is the character of the hypocrite and the warning to the believers: faith must be real and sincere, and wealth and children must never make a believer forget Allah.

- Wealth and children must not divert from Allah's remembrance (63:9)
- Spend before death comes; death is never delayed (63:10 to 11)

Virtue: recitation in the Friday prayer
No separate hadith on the reward of reciting this surah alone is firmly established. What is established is the practice of the Prophet (ﷺ):
- The Prophet (ﷺ) recited Surah Al-Jumu'ah in the first rak'ah and Surah Al-Munafiqun in the second rak'ah of the Friday prayer (Sahih Muslim, from Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (RA) and Hazrat Abu Hurairah (RA)).
- The two surahs suit the day: Al-Jumu'ah teaches the Friday gathering and the priority of Allah's remembrance over trade, and Al-Munafiqun warns against wealth and children making a person forget Allah (63:9).
Often examined
The Prophet (ﷺ) marched against the tribe of Banu al-Mustaliq at the spring called Al-Muraysi' in Sha'ban 5 AH (some say 6 AH) and the Muslims were victorious. Some hypocrites, led by Abdullah bin Ubayy, were also with the army, seeking spoils and an occasion for mischief.
The events (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)
- At the well a Muhajir and an Ansari quarrelled, each calling his own people for help (Hazrat Jabir (RA)).
- Abdullah bin Ubayy took advantage of it and said: do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse; and if we return to Madinah, the more honoured will surely expel the more humble (63:7 to 8).
- Hazrat Zaid bin Arqam (RA), a young Ansari who heard it, reported the words to his uncle and then to the Prophet (ﷺ).
- Abdullah bin Ubayy swore by Allah that he had not said it, and some people thought that Zaid had made a mistake; Zaid was deeply distressed.
- Allah then revealed Surah Al-Munafiqun, which confirmed Zaid's report. The Prophet (ﷺ) took hold of Zaid's ear and said that Allah had confirmed what he had heard.
- Hazrat Umar (RA) asked permission to kill Abdullah bin Ubayy, but the Prophet (ﷺ) refused, saying that people would say that Muhammad kills his companions.
When the hypocrites were asked to come so that the Messenger (ﷺ) might ask forgiveness for them, they turned their heads away (63:5).
They say, "If we return to al-Madinah, the more honored [for power] will surely expel therefrom the more humble." And to Allah belongs [all] honor, and to His Messenger, and to the believers, but the hypocrites do not know

Definition
«نِفَاق» (hypocrisy) is to show faith with the tongue and to hide disbelief or disloyalty in the heart. A hypocrite is one who claims to be a Muslim but does not believe in his heart. The scholars distinguish hypocrisy of belief (hidden disbelief) from hypocrisy of action (the habits of a hypocrite in a Muslim).

- The Prophet (ﷺ) said: the signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks he lies, when he promises he breaks it, and when he is trusted he betrays (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, from Hazrat Abu Hurairah (RA)). Sahih Muslim adds: even if he prays, fasts and claims to be a Muslim.
- In the narration of Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (RA) there are four: when he is trusted he betrays, when he speaks he lies, when he makes a covenant he breaks it, and when he disputes he behaves wickedly (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
- The Prophet (ﷺ) also said that the heaviest prayers on the hypocrites are the Isha and Fajr prayers (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).

Wealth, children and spending before death (63:9 to 11)مال، اولاد اور موت سے پہلے خرچ (63:9 تا 11)Often examined
O you who have believed, let not your wealth and your children divert you from remembrance of Allah. And whoever does that - then those are the losers
And spend [in the way of Allah] from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, "My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous
- Wealth and children must not divert the believers from the remembrance of Allah; whoever allows it is among the losers (63:9). Remembrance includes the prayers, Quran and obeying Allah's commands.
- Spend in Allah's way out of what He has provided before death comes (63:10).
- The one who has neglected will then say: my Lord, why did You not delay me for a short term so that I might give charity and be among the righteous (63:10).
- But Allah never delays a soul when its appointed time has come, and He is aware of all that people do (63:11).
A man asked the Prophet (ﷺ): which charity brings the greatest reward? He replied: that you give while you are healthy and miserly, fearing poverty and hoping for wealth; do not delay until the soul reaches the throat and then say: this much for so-and-so (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, from Hazrat Abu Hurairah (RA)).
