Surah At-Taghabun
Surah At-Taghabun is the 64th surah of the Quran, a Madani surah (in the common view) of 18 ayat and 2 rukus, in para 28. It is one of the musabbihat, the surahs that begin with the glorification of Allah. It speaks of Allah's power, creation and knowledge, the fate of earlier nations who denied their messengers, the certainty of the resurrection and the Day of Taghabun, the fact that calamities come by Allah's permission, and the trial of wealth, wives and children. It ends with fearing Allah as much as one can, spending in His way and giving Him a goodly loan. The model paper has no question from this surah, but the framework sets long topic 25 (intellectual and practical guidance for the believers) from it, and the board's usual questions are its name, the Day of Taghabun, the occasion of 64:14 and the ayat 64:11, 64:14 to 17.

Why is it called At-Taghabun?
The word «التَّغَابُن» comes in 64:9: the Day He will gather you for the Day of Assembly, that is the Day of «التَّغَابُن». It comes from «غَبْن», which means loss or being cheated, and «تغابن» means that one side shows the other to be the loser. On the Day of Judgement the believers will be seen as the real gainers and the disbelievers and the heedless as the real losers. Because this word is found only in this surah, it was named At-Taghabun.
The Day He will assemble you for the Day of Assembly - that is the Day of Deprivation. And whoever believes in Allah and does righteousness - He will remove from him his misdeeds and admit him to gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment

The surah is Madani in the common view, although some scholars say that its first part is Makki. Its style is that of teaching the Muslim community: it speaks of obeying the Messenger, of spending and of the family, which suits the Madani period. There is no single event that caused the whole surah.
For ayah 64:14 there is a report from Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (RA) in Tirmidhi: some men who had accepted Islam in Makkah wanted to emigrate to the Prophet (ﷺ) in Madinah, but their wives and children held them back. When they later came, they saw that the others had learned much of the religion, and they wished to punish their families. Then the ayah was revealed advising them to pardon and forgive.
Central theme

Virtues of Surah At-Taghabun
There is no authentic hadith that fixes a special reward for reciting this surah alone. Two well-founded points are given below.
- It is one of the musabbihat. Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi report that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite the musabbihat before sleeping, and said that among them is an ayah better than a thousand ayat.
- The hadith on 64:15: the Prophet (ﷺ) was giving a sermon when Hazrat Hasan and Hazrat Husayn (RA), wearing red shirts, came walking and stumbling. He came down from the minbar, picked them up and said that Allah spoke the truth: your wealth and your children are a trial; he could not bear to see them and had to pick them up (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nasai).
64:1 to 6Allah's creation, knowledge and the lesson of the past nationsاللہ کی تخلیق، علم اور پچھلی قوموں کا سبقOften examined
The surah begins by saying that whatever is in the heavens and on the earth glorifies Allah; to Him belongs dominion and praise, and He has power over all things (64:1). Then it states five facts.
Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth is exalting Allah. To Him belongs dominion, and to Him belongs [all] praise, and He is over all things competent (1) It is He who created you, and among you is the disbeliever, and among you is the believer. And Allah, of what you do, is Seeing (2) He created the heavens and earth in truth and formed you and perfected your forms; and to Him is the [final] destination (3) He knows what is within the heavens and earth and knows what you conceal and what you declare. And Allah is Knowing of that within the breasts (4)
- Allah created you; then some of you are disbelievers and some believers. He gave man the choice, and He sees what you do (64:2).
- He created the heavens and the earth in truth, with a purpose and not in play, and He gave man the best of forms; to Him is the final return (64:3).
- He knows all that is in the heavens and earth, what you hide and what you show, and what is in the hearts (64:4).
The lesson of the past nations (64:5 to 6)
Has there not come to you the news of those who disbelieved before? So they tasted the bad consequence of their affair, and they will have a painful punishment (5) That is because their messengers used to come to them with clear evidences, but they said, "Shall human beings guide us?" and disbelieved and turned away. And Allah dispensed [with them]; and Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy (6)
- The earlier disbelievers tasted the evil result of their conduct in this world and have a painful punishment in the Hereafter (64:5).
- The reason: their messengers brought clear proofs, but they said: shall human beings guide us? They denied and turned away (64:6).
- Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy: their denial did not harm Him; the loss was theirs (64:6).
64:7 to 10The resurrection and the Day of Taghabunقیامت اور یومِ تغابنOften examined
The disbelievers claimed that they would never be raised after death. Allah ordered the Prophet (ﷺ) to answer with an oath by his Lord: you will surely be raised, then you will be told what you did, and that is easy for Allah (64:7). In the Quran the Prophet (ﷺ) is told three times to swear by his Lord for the resurrection (10:53, 34:3 and 64:7).
Those who disbelieve have claimed that they will never be resurrected. Say, "Yes, by my Lord, you will surely be resurrected; then you will surely be informed of what you did. And that, for Allah, is easy (7) So believe in Allah and His Messenger and the Qur'an which We have sent down. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do (8)
Therefore the disbelievers are called to believe in Allah, His Messenger (ﷺ) and the light that was sent down, the Quran (64:8).
The Day of Taghabun (64:9 to 10)
The Day He will assemble you for the Day of Assembly - that is the Day of Deprivation. And whoever believes in Allah and does righteousness - He will remove from him his misdeeds and admit him to gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment (9) But the ones who disbelieved and denied Our verses - those are the companions of the Fire, abiding eternally therein; and wretched is the destination (10)
- It is the day when Allah gathers all of them, the Day of Assembly («
- It is called the Day of Taghabun (mutual loss and gain) because the loss of the losers will be revealed: the believers gain Paradise and the disbelievers lose everything, and every person will see what he gained or lost (64:9).
- Reward of the believers who do good: their evil deeds are removed and they enter gardens beneath which rivers flow, to stay for ever; this is the great success (64:9).
- Punishment of the disbelievers who denied the signs: they are the companions of the Fire for ever, and it is an evil destination (64:10).
64:11 to 13Calamities by Allah's permission and trust in Allahمصیبتیں اللہ کے اذن سے اور توکلOften examined
No disaster strikes except by permission of Allah. And whoever believes in Allah - He will guide his heart. And Allah is Knowing of all things
- No calamity strikes except by the permission of Allah (64:11). Nothing happens outside His knowledge and decree.
- Whoever believes in Allah, Allah guides his heart: he is given patience and contentment and is helped to see that the matter is from Allah. Alqamah, a senior Tabi'i, explained it as the man who is struck by a calamity, knows that it is from Allah, and accepts it (reported in Ibn Kathir).
- Allah knows all things (64:11).
And obey Allah and obey the Messenger; but if you turn away - then upon Our Messenger is only [the duty of] clear notification
The believers are ordered to obey Allah and obey the Messenger (ﷺ). If they turn away, the Messenger's duty is only to convey the message clearly, and the loss is theirs (64:12).
Tawhid and trust (64:13)
Allah - there is no deity except Him. And upon Allah let the believers rely
There is no deity except Allah, and the believers should rely on Allah alone (64:13). Trust (tawakkul) means doing one's best and leaving the result to Allah.
64:14 to 15Wives, children and wealth as a trialبیوی، اولاد اور مال آزمائش ہیںOften examined
O you who have believed, indeed, among your wives and your children are enemies to you, so beware of them. But if you pardon and overlook and forgive - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful
- Some of your wives and children are enemies to you, so beware of them (64:14). They become enemies when love for them makes a man leave an obligation, such as emigration, jihad or earning only by lawful means; it does not mean that every wife or child is an enemy.
- Even then the believer is told to pardon, overlook and forgive; Allah is Forgiving and Merciful (64:14). Background: the report of Ibn Abbas (RA) in Tirmidhi, described in the introduction.
Your wealth and your children are but a trial, and Allah has with Him a great reward
- Wealth and children are only a trial («فِتْنَة»), a test of whether a person stays obedient to Allah or is distracted by them (64:15).
- With Allah is a great reward, so the one who passes the test and does not put them before Allah's command gains far more than any wealth (64:15).
64:16 to 18Fear Allah as much as you can, spending and the loan to Allahاستطاعت بھر تقویٰ، خرچ اور قرضِ حسنہOften examined
So fear Allah as much as you are able and listen and obey and spend [in the way of Allah]; it is better for your selves. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful
- Fear Allah as much as you are able. Taqwa is a duty within a person's capacity; Allah does not ask what is beyond it (64:16).
- Listen: to the commands of Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) (64:16).
- Obey: act on what you hear (64:16).
- Spend in the way of Allah; it is better for your own souls (64:16).
- Whoever is saved from the stinginess of his own soul (shuhh) is the successful one (64:16).

Ruku 1, ayat 1 to 10Ruku 1: Allah's power and the Day of Taghabun
Ruku 1 begins with the glorification of Allah by all creation. It tells man that he was created with a choice, that Allah knows all, and reminds him of the fate of earlier nations. Then it affirms the resurrection and the Day of Taghabun with the reward of the believers and the punishment of the disbelievers.
It is He who created you, and among you is the disbeliever, and among you is the believer. And Allah, of what you do, is Seeing
The Day He will assemble you for the Day of Assembly - that is the Day of Deprivation. And whoever believes in Allah and does righteousness - He will remove from him his misdeeds and admit him to gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment
- Man is responsible because he can choose belief or disbelief (64:2).
- Do not repeat the mistake of those who said: shall human beings guide us? (64:6).
- Prepare for the Day of Taghabun with faith and good deeds (64:9).
Ruku 2, ayat 11 to 18Ruku 2: Calamity, family and spending
Ruku 2 teaches the believer how to live until that day: accept calamities as from Allah, obey Allah and the Messenger (ﷺ), rely on Allah, be careful (and forgiving) in the family, remember that wealth and children are a trial, fear Allah as much as he can, spend, and lend to Allah.
No disaster strikes except by permission of Allah. And whoever believes in Allah - He will guide his heart. And Allah is Knowing of all things
So fear Allah as much as you are able and listen and obey and spend [in the way of Allah]; it is better for your selves. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful
