Why is it called Al-Anfal?
The first ayah says: they ask you about «الأنفال». The word «انفال» is the plural of «نفل», which means something extra or a reward, and here it means the spoils of war. Since the surah begins with the question about the spoils after Badr and its answer (8:1), it was named Al-Anfal.
They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the bounties [of war]. Say, "The [decision concerning] bounties is for Allah and the Messenger." So fear Allah and amend that which is between you and obey Allah and His Messenger, if you should be believers
Background
In 2 AH a large Quraish caravan led by Abu Sufyan was returning from Syria. The Prophet (ﷺ) set out with about 313 Muslims to intercept it, but Abu Sufyan changed his route and saved the caravan.
Meanwhile the Quraish sent an army of about 1,000 under Abu Jahl from Makkah. The two sides met at Badr on 17 Ramadan 2 AH. Although the Muslims were few, Allah helped them and gave them victory. The Quran calls that day «يوم الفرقان», the day that separated truth from falsehood (8:41). After the battle questions arose about the spoils and the prisoners, and this surah answered them. The details are in the section on the battle of Badr.

Main theme and the guarantee of success
The main theme of Al-Anfal is how a believing community should conduct itself in war and in peace: the surah trains the Muslims, after their first battle, to obey Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), to keep taqwa, to be steadfast, united and trustful in Allah, and to keep their intentions clean from love of spoils.
According to the surah the guarantee of a human being's success is:

Before Islam
- Among the Arabs the property taken from the enemy was treated as belonging wholly to whoever seized it.
- The chief of the tribe took a large share for himself, a quarter of it, called «
- Prisoners were enslaved or released for ransom.
- Among earlier nations the spoils were not lawful: they were gathered and a fire from the sky came down and burnt them (as mentioned in the hadith of Bukhari and Muslim about an earlier prophet's campaign).
In Islam
Surah Al-Anfal begins by saying that the spoils belong to Allah and the Messenger (ﷺ), so that no one takes them by greed and quarrelling, and told the believers to fear Allah, to put things right between themselves and to obey (8:1). The Prophet (ﷺ) said that among five things given to him and not to any before him was that the spoils were made lawful for him (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
And know that anything you obtain of war booty - then indeed, for Allah is one fifth of it and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives and the orphans, the needy, and the [stranded] traveler, if you have believed in Allah and in that which We sent down to Our Servant on the day of criterion - the day when the two armies met. And Allah, over all things, is competent
Islam fixed the rule in 8:41: one fifth («خمس») of the spoils is for Allah, the Messenger (ﷺ), the near relatives, the orphans, the needy and the traveller; the remaining four fifths are for the fighters.
After the dispute about the ransom of the prisoners, the surah declared what the Muslims had taken lawful and good, and told them to fear Allah (8:69).

The help of Allah in the surah
- The Muslims asked Allah for help and He promised a thousand angels, coming one after another; this was good news and comfort for the hearts, and victory is only from Allah (8:9 to 10).
- Allah covered them with drowsiness, a security from Him, and sent rain to purify them, to remove Satan's whisper, to strengthen their hearts and make their feet firm (8:11).
- The angels were told to strengthen the believers, and terror was cast into the hearts of the disbelievers (8:12).
- The handful of dust: the Prophet (ﷺ) threw a handful of earth towards the enemy and Allah says it was Allah who threw (8:17). The real doer of the victory is Allah.
[Remember] when you asked help of your Lord, and He answered you, "Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand from the angels, following one another (9) And Allah made it not but good tidings and so that your hearts would be assured thereby. And victory is not but from Allah. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise (10) [Remember] when He overwhelmed you with drowsiness [giving] security from Him and sent down upon you from the sky, rain by which to purify you and remove from you the evil [suggestions] of Satan and to make steadfast your hearts and plant firmly thereby your feet (11) [Remember] when your Lord inspired to the angels, "I am with you, so strengthen those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieved, so strike [them] upon the necks and strike from them every fingertip (12)
And you did not kill them, but it was Allah who killed them. And you threw not, [O Muhammad], when you threw, but it was Allah who threw that He might test the believers with a good test. Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing
Yaum al-Furqan
Badr is called «يوم الفرقان» (8:41) because on that day Allah clearly separated truth from falsehood: the small, poorly equipped Muslim band defeated an army about three times its size, and the power of the Quraish leaders was broken. «فرقان» means that which separates.

The prisoners
The Prophet (ﷺ) consulted the Companions; Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) advised taking ransom and Hazrat Umar (RA) advised executing them. The Prophet (ﷺ) took ransom, and the surah then warned that a prophet should not hold prisoners until he has established his strength in the land and that they should not choose the goods of this world (8:67 to 68); it then allowed the spoils as lawful (8:69) and promised the prisoners better if Allah finds good in their hearts (8:70). Seerah books also say that some literate prisoners were freed on teaching reading and writing to Muslim children.

Background, before BadrThe message of the Quraish to Abdullah bin Ubayy
After the Prophet (ﷺ) and the Muhajirun settled in Madinah, the Quraish of Makkah wrote a letter to Abdullah bin Ubayy and to the idol-worshippers of the Aws and Khazraj in Madinah (recorded in Sunan Abu Dawud).
The message
- You have given shelter to our man (the Prophet (ﷺ)).
- Either fight him or expel him from Madinah.
- Otherwise we will come against you with all our strength, kill your fighters and take your women.
How the Prophet (ﷺ) answered
When the letter reached them, Abdullah bin Ubayy and his companions gathered to fight. The Prophet (ﷺ) met them and told them that the threat of the Quraish was a danger to them, but they were planning to fight their own sons and brothers, and the Quraish could not harm them as much as they would harm themselves. When they heard this they dispersed.
This shows the plots against the Prophet (ﷺ) that 8:30 speaks of, and his wisdom in keeping Madinah united.
And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners

- Be firm, remember Allah much, obey Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), do not dispute or you will lose courage, and be patient (8:45 to 46).
- Do not be like those who came out boasting and showing off to people (8:47).
- Those who break treaties repeatedly are the worst of creatures; if you fear treachery from a people, throw back their treaty openly and equally (8:55 to 58).
- Prepare as much strength and cavalry as you can, so that the enemy is awed, and what you spend in Allah's way will be repaid (8:60).
- If the enemy inclines to peace, incline to it and trust Allah (8:61).
- The ratio: twenty steadfast believers overcome two hundred (1 to 10); then, in view of weakness, a hundred overcome two hundred (1 to 2), and Allah is with the steadfast (8:65 to 66).
And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know [but] whom Allah knows. And whatever you spend in the cause of Allah will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged (60) And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing (61)
O Prophet, urge the believers to battle. If there are among you twenty [who are] steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are among you one hundred [who are] steadfast, they will overcome a thousand of those who have disbelieved because they are a people who do not understand (65) Now, Allah has lightened [the hardship] for you, and He knows that among you is weakness. So if there are from you one hundred [who are] steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are among you a thousand, they will overcome two thousand by permission of Allah. And Allah is with the steadfast (66)
8:72 to 75Hijrah and nusrah
The surah ends with the bond between the believers. «Hijrah» is leaving one's home for the sake of Allah; «nusrah» is helping the migrants, as the Ansar of Madinah did.
- Those who believed, migrated and strove with their wealth and lives, and those who sheltered and helped them, are friends and protectors of one another (8:72).
- Believers who did not migrate have no such bond until they migrate; if they ask for help in religion you must help them, except against a people with whom you have a treaty (8:72).
- The disbelievers are protectors of one another; if the believers do not act likewise there will be disorder (8:73).
- The migrants and helpers are the true believers, with forgiveness and noble provision (8:74).
- Those who believed and migrated later and strove with them are also of you; and blood relatives have a greater claim on one another in Allah's book (8:75).
But those who have believed and emigrated and fought in the cause of Allah and those who gave shelter and aided - it is they who are the believers, truly. For them is forgiveness and noble provision
Rukus 1 to 2, ayat 1 to 19Rukus 1 to 2: spoils, believers, angels, rain
Ruku 1: Spoils, the believers and the angels (8:1 to 10)
The surah opens with the question about the spoils and answers that they belong to Allah and the Messenger (ﷺ); the Muslims are told to fear Allah, make peace among themselves and obey. Then the qualities of true believers are given and the help of a thousand angels at Badr is announced.
The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely
Ruku 2: Drowsiness, rain and punishment of the disbelievers (8:11 to 19)
Allah gave the Muslims drowsiness and rain at Badr, told the angels to keep the believers firm, announced a severe punishment for those who opposed Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), and forbade turning the back in battle. Ayah 17 says that Allah was the real doer in throwing the dust and killing the enemy. The details are in the section on the battle of Badr.
Rukus 3 to 4, ayat 20 to 37Rukus 3 to 4: obedience, trust and taqwa
Ruku 3: Obedience to the Messenger (ﷺ) and trusts (8:20 to 28)
The believers are told to obey Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) and not to be like those who hear but do not understand. The Muslims are reminded of their weakness in Makkah and the later help of Allah. Ayah 27 forbids betraying trusts and ayah 28 says wealth and children are a trial.
O you who have believed, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. And know that Allah intervenes between a man and his heart and that to Him you will be gathered
O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence]
Ruku 4: Reward of taqwa and the plot of the disbelievers (8:29 to 37)
Those who keep taqwa are promised «فرقان» (a criterion to tell right from wrong), the removal of their sins and forgiveness. Ayah 30 recalls the plot of the Quraish to imprison, kill or expel the Prophet (ﷺ) while Allah planned better. The objections of the disbelievers and the fate of their spending are also described.
O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty
Rukus 5 to 6, ayat 38 to 48Rukus 5 to 6: khums, Badr and steadfastness
Ruku 5: Purpose of fighting, khums and the field of Badr (8:38 to 44)
The disbelievers are invited to repent; if they persist, the fate of earlier nations awaits them. The Muslims are ordered to fight until persecution ends. Ayah 41 gives the distribution of the khums and mentions Yaum al-Furqan. Ayat 42 to 44 describe the positions at Badr and Allah's wisdom in bringing the two armies together. The ruling is explained in the section on the spoils of war.
Ruku 6: Steadfastness, unity and Satan's deception (8:45 to 48)
The Muslims are taught the rules of meeting the enemy: be firm, remember Allah much, obey Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), avoid disputes and be patient; do not come out proudly and to show off as the Quraish did. Ayah 48 says Satan made the deeds of the disbelievers look fair and then left them.
O you who have believed, when you encounter a company [from the enemy forces], stand firm and remember Allah much that you may be successful (45) And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient (46)
Rukus 7 to 8, ayat 49 to 64Rukus 7 to 8: hypocrites, treaties, strength and peace
Ruku 7: The hypocrites, Pharaoh and keeping treaties (8:49 to 58)
The hypocrites and sick-hearted said that the Muslims were deluded by their religion; the answer is that whoever trusts Allah finds Him Mighty and Wise. The death of the disbelievers at the hands of the angels is described, and the example of Pharaoh's people is given. Allah does not change a favour on a people until they change what is in themselves (8:53). The ruling on treaty-breakers is given.
Ruku 8: Preparation against the enemy and readiness for peace (8:59 to 64)
The disbelievers must not think they can escape Allah. The Muslims are ordered to prepare military power and horses as far as they can, to keep the enemy in awe. If the enemy inclines to peace, they should too and trust Allah. Allah united the hearts of the believers; if you had spent all that is on earth you could not have united them (8:63). See the section on rules of war and peace.
Rukus 9 to 10, ayat 65 to 75Rukus 9 to 10: jihad, prisoners and hijrah
Ruku 9: Encouragement to fight, the ratio and prisoners (8:65 to 69)
The Prophet (ﷺ) is told to urge the believers to fight. At first twenty steadfast believers were promised victory over two hundred, then the burden was lightened to a hundred over two hundred and a thousand over two thousand. Ayat 67 to 69 correct the taking of ransom from the prisoners and then declare the spoils lawful and good.
Ruku 10: Address to the prisoners, hijrah, nusrah and relatives (8:70 to 75)
The prisoners are told that if Allah sees good in their hearts He will give them better than what was taken; if they intend treachery, Allah has already dealt with their like. The excellence of the Muhajirun, the Ansar and those who followed them is described, and the law of the rights of relatives on each other is given. See the section on hijrah and nusrah.

- «انفال» is the plural of «نفل», which means an extra or a gift. In the language of the Quran it means the spoils of war (maal-e-ghanimat).
- The surah begins (8:1) with the question about the «انفال», so it is called Al-Anfal.
- It is a Madani surah, revealed in 2 AH after the battle of Badr.
- It has 75 ayat and 10 rukus, and it is the 8th surah of the Quran (parts 9 and 10).
- The surah is a commentary on the battle of Badr: the lessons of the first battle between truth and falsehood, and the moral training of the Muslims after it.
- Its main subjects are the rules of spoils (8:1, 8:41), the qualities of true believers (8:2 to 4), steadfastness, unity and obedience to Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), and the laws of war and peace (8:60 to 61).
- After Badr, questions arose among the Companions about how to divide the spoils, what to do with the prisoners, and how the Muslims should behave after victory.
- The surah answered these questions (8:1, 8:41, 8:67 to 69) and also trained the believers in faith, unity and obedience.
- A trade caravan of Quraish was returning from Syria under Abu Sufyan. The Prophet (ﷺ) and the Companions set out to intercept it, but Abu Sufyan changed the route and saved the caravan.

- The Muslims were about 313, with very few horses and weapons.
- The army of Quraish was about 1,000 well-armed men, roughly three times larger.

- «فرقان» means that which separates. On that day Allah clearly separated truth from falsehood, giving victory to the small band of believers over a much larger army.

- Among the Arabs, all the booty belonged to the victors by force of arms. The chief or the strong took the largest and best share, and there was no fixed rule of distribution.

- The Companions asked about the spoils. The answer was: the spoils belong to Allah and the Messenger (ﷺ), that is, the decision about them is theirs (8:1).
- The believers were told to fear Allah, to mend their relations with one another and to obey Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ). The detailed division came in 8:41.
- «خمس» is one fifth of the spoils. According to 8:41 it is for Allah and the Messenger (ﷺ), the near relatives, the orphans, the poor and the wayfarer.
- The remaining four fifths are shared among the fighters.

- Peace rules: accept peace when offered (8:61), keep treaties, and if betrayal is feared, openly end the treaty on equal terms (8:58).
- The prisoners were released for ransom. Allah gently rebuked this, because a prophet should not keep captives until he has crushed the enemy's power; the believers should seek the Hereafter, not worldly goods (8:67).
- The ransom taken was then declared lawful and good (8:69), and the prisoners were promised better and forgiveness if they had good in their hearts (8:70).
- Those who believed, migrated and strove with their wealth and lives (Muhajirun), and those who gave them shelter and help (Ansar), are allies of one another (8:72).
- Allah calls them the believers in truth and promises them forgiveness and noble provision (8:74). Those who joined later are also part of them (8:75).
Ayah questions (Section B, Q.2 c)
Section B, Q.2 (c) prints an ayah with its translation and asks one to three sub-questions worth 3 marks in all. First answer from the words of the ayah itself, then add the context. Keep each part short and exact, in line with its marks. The ayat 8:2, 8:29, 8:41 and 8:46 have already been set in the 2026 and model papers (see the exam guide), so these questions cover other high-yield ayat of Al-Anfal.
They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the bounties [of war]. Say, "The [decision concerning] bounties is for Allah and the Messenger." So fear Allah and amend that which is between you and obey Allah and His Messenger, if you should be believers
They asked about the «انفال», the spoils of war.
- The spoils belong to Allah and the Messenger (ﷺ).
- Fear Allah, mend relations among yourselves and obey Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), if you are believers.
Note. This is the first ayah of the surah; the dispute over the spoils after Badr is its background.
[Remember] when you asked help of your Lord, and He answered you, "Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand from the angels, following one another
They asked their Lord for help (they cried to Him for aid).
- Allah answered their prayer.
- He promised to reinforce them with a thousand angels, following one another.
[Remember] when He overwhelmed you with drowsiness [giving] security from Him and sent down upon you from the sky, rain by which to purify you and remove from you the evil [suggestions] of Satan and to make steadfast your hearts and plant firmly thereby your feet
Drowsiness, which gave them security from Him.
- To purify them and remove the evil whispers of Satan.
- To strengthen their hearts and make their feet firm.
And you did not kill them, but it was Allah who killed them. And you threw not, [O Muhammad], when you threw, but it was Allah who threw that He might test the believers with a good test. Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing
Allah killed them, not the Muslims.
- The Prophet (ﷺ) threw a handful of dust at the enemy, but it was Allah who made it effective.
- This was to test the believers with a good test (a favour that proves their gratitude).
O you who have believed, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. And know that Allah intervenes between a man and his heart and that to Him you will be gathered
To respond to Allah and the Messenger (ﷺ) when he calls them to that which gives them life.
- Allah comes between a man and his heart, so he should not delay obedience.
- To Him all will be gathered.
O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence]
The believers.
- Betraying Allah and the Messenger (ﷺ) and betraying one's trusts is forbidden.
- The words «وَأَنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ» (while you know) show that deliberate betrayal is a grave sin.
And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners
To imprison him, to kill him, or to expel him from Makkah.
- Allah's plan prevailed; the Prophet (ﷺ) migrated safely to Madinah.
- Allah is the best of planners.
O you who have believed, when you encounter a company [from the enemy forces], stand firm and remember Allah much that you may be successful
To stand firm.
- To remember Allah much.
- So that the believers may be successful.
Note. The next ayah, 8:46, was set in the 2026 paper; this ayah gives its first half.
That is because Allah would not change a favor which He had bestowed upon a people until they change what is within themselves. And indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing
Allah does not change a favour He has given to a people until they change what is within themselves.
- Blessings are lost through ingratitude and sin; a nation's rise and fall depends on its own conduct.
- Allah is the Hearing, the Knowing.
And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know [but] whom Allah knows. And whatever you spend in the cause of Allah will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged
Whatever strength they can, including steeds of war.
So that the enemies of Allah and of the Muslims, and others unknown to them, are overawed.
It will be repaid in full and they will not be wronged.
And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing
They should incline to peace too.
On Allah.
As-Sami (the Hearing) and Al-Alim (the Knowing).
And brought together their hearts. If you had spent all that is in the earth, you could not have brought their hearts together; but Allah brought them together. Indeed, He is Exalted in Might and Wise
He joined their hearts together.
- No. Even if all the wealth of the earth were spent, their hearts could not be united.
- Only Allah, the Mighty and Wise, brought them together.
Note. The Aws and Khazraj, long enemies, became brothers in Madinah through Islam.
O Prophet, urge the believers to battle. If there are among you twenty [who are] steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are among you one hundred [who are] steadfast, they will overcome a thousand of those who have disbelieved because they are a people who do not understand
The Prophet (ﷺ), who is told to urge the believers to fight.
- Twenty steadfast believers will overcome two hundred (1 to 10).
- One hundred steadfast believers will overcome a thousand disbelievers, who do not understand.
Note. The burden was lightened in 8:66 to the ratio of 1 to 2.
Indeed, those who have believed and emigrated and fought with their wealth and lives in the cause of Allah and those who gave shelter and aided - they are allies of one another. But those who believed and did not emigrate - for you there is no guardianship of them until they emigrate. And if they seek help of you for the religion, then you must help, except against a people between yourselves and whom is a treaty. And Allah is Seeing of what you do
The Muhajirun (who believed, migrated and fought with their wealth and lives) and the Ansar (who gave shelter and help).
There is no guardianship with them until they migrate.
They must help them if they ask for help in religion, except against a people with whom there is a treaty.
But those who have believed and emigrated and fought in the cause of Allah and those who gave shelter and aided - it is they who are the believers, truly. For them is forgiveness and noble provision
Those who believed, migrated and strove in Allah's cause, and those who gave shelter and aid.
- Forgiveness (maghfirah).
- Noble provision (rizq-e-kareem).

Answer A. The common figure for the Muslims at Badr is 313 against about 1,000 of Quraish.
- Obedience to Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), and standing firm without dispute (8:45 to 46).
- Patience, unity and remembering Allah much; these bring success (falah) and Allah's help.
- The Quraish wrote to Abdullah bin Ubayy and his pagan companions in Madinah, threatening that they would fight the Muslims unless he and his people fought or expelled the Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions (Sunan Abu Dawud).
- This shows the early danger from hypocrites inside Madinah and the pressure on the new Muslim state that led to Badr.
And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient
- Obedience to Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), no dispute with each other, and patience.
- If they dispute, they will lose courage and become cowardly.
- Their strength and prestige (rih) will depart, and they will lose Allah's help, as Allah is with the patient.
(8:46) is the formula for the loss of strength through disunity.

Surah Al-Anfal was revealed after the battle of Badr (2 AH) and deals with its spoils and lessons. Uhud, Hunayn and Tabuk came later.
- Before Islam booty was taken by force: the chief took a quarter or the best part and the rest was seized by the strongest, which caused quarrels and wars.
- Among earlier communities booty was not lawful for the Prophets and their followers (Sahih Bukhari); Islam made it lawful and gave Allah and the Messenger authority over it (8:1), with a fixed one-fifth (8:41).
- The day of the battle of Badr (17 Ramadan 2 AH) is called «
- Because on that day Allah separated truth from falsehood: 313 Muslims defeated about 1,000 Quraish, who lost 70 killed and 70 captured.
The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely
- When Allah is mentioned, their hearts tremble with fear («
- When His verses are recited, their faith increases.
- They put their trust in their Lord alone («

Answer C. «انفال» is the plural of «نفل» and here means the spoils of war (ghanimah).
- The main theme is the rules of jihad and of the spoils of war (anfal) in the light of the battle of Badr.
- It also teaches obedience to Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), unity, patience, trust in Allah and the Muslims' relations with other nations.
- Badr was fought on 17 Ramadan 2 AH, and is called «Yaum-ul-Furqan» (8:41).
- Outcome: 313 Muslims defeated about 1,000 of Quraish; 14 Muslims were martyred, 70 disbelievers were killed and 70 captured.
- One fifth (khums) of the spoils belongs to Allah and the Messenger (ﷺ), for the near relatives, orphans, the needy and the traveller.
- The other four fifths go to the fighters who took part.

O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty
- Allah will grant a criterion (furqan) to distinguish truth from falsehood.
- He will remove their misdeeds.
- He will forgive them; Allah is the Possessor of great bounty.

Surah Al-Anfal gives the rules of jihad: preparation, steadfastness, spoils, prisoners, and war and peace. Purdah, prayer and Hajj are not its main subject.
- «اَنْفَال» is the plural of «نَفْل» and means extra gifts or bounty, here the spoils of war.
- The surah opens with the question about spoils after Badr (8:1), «they ask you about the spoils», and answers that they belong to Allah and the Messenger (ﷺ); hence the name.
- Badr took place on 17 Ramadan 2 AH: 313 Muslims faced about 1,000 Quraish.
- It is called «يَوْمُ الْفُرْقَانِ» (8:41) because Allah separated truth from falsehood that day: 70 Quraish were killed and 70 captured, against 14 Muslim martyrs.
O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty
- Furqan: a criterion by which to tell right from wrong (and gain victory).
- Allah removes their misdeeds and forgives them; He is the Possessor of great bounty.
