Exam guide
امتحانی رہنمائی
This unit is a guide to the paper, not new content. It shows the FBISE pattern (50 marks, 2 hours 30 minutes), what the 2026 papers actually asked from each surah, a time plan, and a technique for each part: the MCQs, the 2-mark short questions, the word meanings, the ayah questions and the two long questions. It also teaches you how to recognise an ayah you are unsure of, lists the most likely ayat, and sets out the writing etiquette (honorifics and respectful writing) that the framework requires. Read it once before you start the surahs and again in the last week.

What the 2026 papers actually asked
2026 کے پرچوں میں اصل میں کیا پوچھا گیا
There was no Tarjama-tul-Quran paper in 2025, so the evidence is the three 2026 sets (B, A and D) and the FBISE model paper. The tables below group every question by surah and set. Use them to see the pattern, not to guess exact questions: the same topic comes back in a different form.

Each OR pairs two different surahs, so a student who knows only two surahs well can still choose.

A time plan for 150 minutes150 منٹ کی منصوبہ بندیOften examined
The paper has 50 marks in 150 minutes, so roughly 3 minutes a mark, but the marks are not equal in effort: an MCQ takes a minute, a long answer takes half an hour. The plan below follows the model paper: Section A first (15 minutes on the question page), then 135 minutes for Sections B and C. Practise it once with a timer.
| Part | Marks | Minutes | Clock | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A: 10 MCQs | 10 | 15 | 0 to 15 | About 1 minute each, then 5 minutes to check. Ink only, no overwriting. |
| B (a): 5 short questions | 10 | 25 | 15 to 40 | 5 minutes each: choose between the OR in 30 seconds, write two points. |
| B (b): 5 words | 5 | 5 | 40 to 45 | One word each. Do not linger on a word you do not know. |
| B (c): 3 ayah questions | 9 | 25 | 45 to 70 | About 8 minutes each: identify the ayah, answer part by part. |
| C: Q.3 (8 marks) | 8 | 35 | 70 to 105 | 5 minutes to plan the headings, 25 to write, 5 for the guidance part. |
| C: Q.4 (8 marks) | 8 | 35 | 105 to 140 | Same as Q.3. |
| Final check | - | 10 | 140 to 150 | Question numbers, OR choices marked, ayah references, honorifics. |
Rules that save marks
نمبر بچانے والے اصول
- Never let one question steal another's time. When the minutes for a part are over, stop, leave a few lines and move on. A half-written long answer still earns marks for what is written, a blank one earns none.
- Choose between the two sides of an OR at once, by asking which you can answer with the most ticked points, and write the question number exactly as printed, for example Q.2 (a)(iii).
- In the long answers, plan the numbered headings first (2 minutes), because the examiner marks organisation as well as content.
- Write the guidance part (2 marks) in every long question. It is the easiest 2 marks and the one most often skipped when time runs out.
- If you finish Section A early, do not use the extra time there: the MCQ page is collected at 15 minutes, so check it and then begin Section B.
Often examined
Section A is 10 marks in 15 minutes: 8 MCQs on the introduction and occasion of revelation of the surahs and 2 on the 80 words. Every MCQ in the three 2026 sets and the model paper tests one fact. So the winning method is two things: know the fact sheet below, and use elimination when memory fails.

A method for every MCQ
ہر MCQ کا طریقہ
- Read the stem and cover the options. Recall the answer in your own words first. This protects you from options built to look right.
- Uncover the options and tick the one that matches. If it is there, check the other three quickly and fill the bubble.
- If you cannot recall, eliminate. Remove options from the wrong surah, the wrong battle or the wrong century; a date that fits no event you know is usually a distractor.
- Watch the key words: first, second, not, only, most. A single word changes the answer.
- Never leave a bubble empty. Mark your best choice and move on.

The 2 word MCQs
الفاظ کے 2 MCQs
These test the 80 selected words (unit 6). Three habits help. First, learn each word with its person and tense: «تُحِبُّوْنَ» is you love, and the options in Set A also offered they love, they dislike and you dislike, so only the person tells you which is right. Second, expect the options to be meanings of other words from the list, so recall the meaning before reading them. Third, learn the meaning as the list gives it: «يَظُنُّوْنَ» is they are certain here (not they think), and «دَابِرَ» is root (not a veil or impurity).
Section B (a): technique for short questionsحصہ دوم (الف): مختصر سوالات کی تکنیکOften examined
Each short question is 2 marks and carries an OR. Two marks mean two points an examiner can tick. A paragraph of five sentences gains nothing over two exact, labelled points, and a vague answer loses both marks. Some questions are printed with the split 1+1 (for example, which battle and how many martyred): then give one line for each half.
What to write for each kind of question
ہر قسم کے سوال میں کیا لکھیں
| Kind of question | The two points | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Name (why is it so called?) | 1. the meaning of the name; 2. the ayah or event that gives the name, with the reference | Al-Anfal: plural of «نفل», the spoils of war; the surah begins with the question about the spoils (8:1). |
| Number, place and time | 1. Makki or Madani and the number; 2. when it was revealed | Aal-e-Imran: the 3rd surah of the Quran with 200 ayat. |
| Event (when, what, result) | 1. the date and the sides; 2. the outcome or result | Badr: 17 Ramadan 2 AH; 313 Muslims defeated about 1,000 Quraish. |
| Reason or cause | 1. the main reason; 2. the proof from the ayah or the event | Uhud setback: the archers left their post for the spoils against the Prophet's (ﷺ) order (3:152). |
| Virtue (fazail) | 1. what the hadith says; 2. who reported it (the collection) | See the next table. |
Virtues (fazail): the authentic references
فضائل: مستند حوالے
A virtue question wants the content of a hadith and, for the second mark, its source. Use only these well-known, authentic reports, paraphrased in your own words, and never invent a hadith or a collection. If you are not sure of the collection, write the meaning and say the hadith is reported by the Prophet (ﷺ).
فضیلت کے سوال میں حدیث کا مضمون اور دوسرے نمبر کے لیے اس کا ماخذ پوچھا جاتا ہے۔ صرف یہی معروف اور مستند روایات اپنے الفاظ میں لکھیں، اور کبھی کوئی حدیث یا کتاب اپنی طرف سے نہ بنائیں۔ اگر کتاب کا یقین نہ ہو تو مفہوم لکھیں اور کہیں کہ یہ نبی کریم ﷺ سے مروی ہے۔
| Topic | What the hadith says | Reference |

How to write the answers
جواب کیسے لکھیں
- Write the number and the word, then the meaning, in the language of your paper. One clear meaning is enough; the mark is for the meaning, not for a sentence.
- Give the person and tense that the word has: «يَسْئَلُوْنَ» is they ask (present), «جٰهَدُوْا» is they strove (past), and «اِصْبِرُوْا» is a command (be patient). Writing he for they, or you for they, loses the mark.
- If the word looks like another, think of the surah it is from: «اَلنَّاسُ» is the people, «نَجَسٌ» is impure, and «سَوَآءٌ» is equal.
- Do not leave a word blank. Write the meaning you think is closest from the sense of the ayah that contains it.
Often examined
Q.2 (c) has three questions of 3 marks each, every one with an OR. In each, an ayah is printed with its Urdu and English translation, followed by one to three parts. In 2026 the surah name and ayah number were printed beside the ayah in Set B (for example, Al-Baqarah 119); do not depend on that, because the model paper did not print them. This part tests SLO I-11-A-03: understand the ayah from its translation.
How the questions are set
سوالات کیسے بنائے جاتے ہیں
| Split of the 3 marks | Example from the papers |
|---|---|
| One part, 3 marks | For whom is the one fifth? (8:41); in which temporary things has attraction been placed? (3:14); what qualities of the doers of good are mentioned? (3:134) |
| 1 + 2 | What has been ordered? (1) What would happen if the order is not followed? (2) (8:46) |
| 2 + 1 | What kinds of verses are there? (2) What is the foundation of the Book? (1) (3:7) |
| 1 + 1 + 1 | Which belief, which two acts of worship, which people to be supported? (2:177); how much time, what power, what punishment? (9:2) |
The marks of each part tell you how many points to write: 1 mark is one point, 2 marks two points, 3 marks three points. Some parts say 'any two' or 'any three': then write exactly that many, because a long list gets no extra marks.
ہر حصے کے نمبر بتاتے ہیں کہ کتنے نکات لکھنے ہیں: 1 نمبر ایک نکتہ، 2 نمبر دو نکات، 3 نمبر تین نکات۔ بعض حصوں میں «کوئی دو» یا «کوئی تین» لکھا ہوتا ہے: اتنے ہی لکھیں، کیونکہ لمبی فہرست پر اضافی نمبر نہیں ملتے۔
A step-by-step method
قدم بہ قدم طریقہ
- Identify the surah and the context. Read the printed reference if there is one, otherwise use the signature words in section 7. Say to yourself: which surah, which event or theme (Badr, Uhud, Tabuk, Bani Israel, Najran)?
- Read each part and write its marks beside it. The marks fix the number of points.
- Answer from the ayah's own words first. Most parts can be answered from the printed translation alone: underline the words that answer the part (the verb that is ordered, the list that is given, the result that is promised) and write them in your own sentence.
- Then add the background in one line, only if marks remain or the part asks why. For example: this was said at Badr, or this followed the announcement at the Hajj of 9 AH.
- Write the answer part by part with the labels (a), (b), (c) as printed, each point on its own line, and the reference at the end, for example (الانفال: 46).
Worked mini-examples from the 2026 papers
2026 کے پرچوں سے عملی مثالیں
In each example the ayah is printed first. Read the translation, find the answer in its words, and compare with the model answer.
ہر مثال میں پہلے آیت دی گئی ہے۔ ترجمہ پڑھیں، اس کے الفاظ سے جواب نکالیں، پھر نمونہ جواب سے موازنہ کریں۔
Example 1: Al-Baqarah 119 (Set B, 1+2)
مثال 1: البقرہ: 119 (سیٹ B، 1+2)
(اس سے بڑھ کر نشانی کیا ہوگی کہ) ہم نے تم کو علم حق کے ساتھ خوش خبری دینے والا ور ڈرانے والا بنا کر بھیجا اب جو لوگ جہنم سے رشتہ جوڑ چکے ہیں، ان کی طرف سے تم ذمہ دار و جواب دہ نہیں ہو

Example 2: Al-Anfal 46 (Set B OR, 1+2)

And know that anything you obtain of war booty - then indeed, for Allah is one fifth of it and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives and the orphans, the needy, and the [stranded] traveler, if you have believed in Allah and in that which We sent down to Our Servant on the day of criterion - the day when the two armies met. Recognising an ayah when you are unsureجب آیت نامعلوم لگے تو اسے پہچانناOften examined
Sometimes the ayah in Q.2 (c) is one you have not memorised. Do not panic: every ayah in the paper comes with its translation, and the translation always carries clues, such as a name, an event or a command. Match the clues with the signature words and themes of each surah below. They also help you decide which of the two ayat of an OR you can answer.

Using context clues
سیاق کے اشارے استعمال کرنا
- Look at who is addressed. Children of Israel points to Al-Baqarah; People of the Scripture mostly to Aal-e-Imran; the Prophet (ﷺ) addressed about the booty or the battle to Al-Anfal; the polytheists and hypocrites to At-Tawbah.
- Look for an event: a name (Musa, Ibrahim, Isa, Maryam), a place (Makkah, the cave) or a battle word (the two armies, the heat, the archers' order).
- Look for the command or the result: be patient, spend, do not dispute, do not hoard, the punishment of the disbelievers. These are the points the parts ask.
- Look at the shape: a very long ayah is rare and is Ayat-ud-Dain (2:282); two ayat together at the end of a surah are 2:285 to 286 or 9:128 to 129.
If you are still not sure
اگر پھر بھی یقین نہ ہو
- Answer from the translation. The answer to almost every part is in the printed words, so the parts can be answered even without knowing the surah.
- Write the general lesson and the general context safely: for example, this ayah is from a Madani surah and teaches obedience, patience, unity or spending in the cause of Allah. Add the context only if you are sure of it.
- Do not guess a number or a name (for example how many ayat, or which battle). A wrong specific fact can cost more than a safe general line.
- Do not write a surah or ayah reference unless you are sure of it; a wrong reference is worse than none.
- Never leave a part blank. A reasoned answer from the ayah's meaning earns some marks, a blank earns none.

Framework, rules 1 to 13Writing etiquette required by the frameworkفریم ورک کے مطابق آدابِ تحریر
The FBISE Assessment Framework gives teachers and paper setters 13 rules for writing sacred names and terms. They apply to the paper and to your answers: the Quran is a book of respect, and missing honorifics are a visible fault. The table follows the framework's list in order; the English forms are the ones printed in the English paper.

Allah's name and the Quran
اللہ کا نام اور قرآن
- Write Allah's name in full and with respect: Allah (Ta'ala). Never write God, and never shorten the name.
- Write the Holy Quran or Quran Majeed, with a capital Q in English, not just the book.
- Quote Quranic words only when you are sure of every letter. A mistake in Arabic is worse than no Arabic: the ayah is already printed with its translation in Section B (c), so in the answers write the meaning, and quote only a key word in guillemets or quotation marks, such as the word «التَّقْوٰى».
- Write the heading of an answer in your own words; never write on the question paper's ayah or cross out the printed text.

Put the reference in brackets at the end of the point it supports, as the notes of this site do. Give the surah name and the number; the number alone is acceptable only when the surah is clear from the question. A correct reference shows the examiner you know where the point comes from.
حوالہ اس نکتے کے آخر میں قوسین میں لکھیں جس کی وہ تائید کرتا ہے، جیسا کہ اس سائٹ کے نوٹس میں ہے۔ سورۃ کا نام اور نمبر دونوں لکھیں؛ صرف نمبر تبھی کافی ہے جب سورۃ سوال سے واضح ہو۔ درست حوالہ ممتحن کو دکھاتا ہے کہ آپ کو معلوم ہے نکتہ کہاں سے آیا۔
