Surah Al-An'am
Surah Al-An'am is the 6th surah of the Quran: a Makki surah of 165 ayat and 20 rukus, revealed in the late Makki period, mostly at one time, when the Quraish denied the Prophet (ﷺ) and demanded angels and miracles. It answers them with the three basics of faith: tawhid (the oneness of Allah), risalah (prophethood) and akhirah (the Hereafter), and it ends with the great commandments of 6:151 to 153. The notes give the introduction and the few authentic virtues, topic sections (the arguments for tawhid, Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) and the 18 prophets, the demands of the Quraish, the past nations, beliefs and social attitudes, the pagan customs, lawful and unlawful animals, the Hereafter, the unseen, the manners of calling to Allah), ruku-by-ruku notes, exam points and a guide to recognising the ayat. FBISE asks the name and shan-e-nuzul in MCQs and short questions, the ayat (the model paper printed 6:6) in the ayah question, and long questions 1 and 2 of unit 16 come from this surah.

The name and the reason for it
- The surah is called Al-An'am because «الأنعام» means cattle (camels, cows, sheep and goats), and the surah speaks about the pagan customs concerning them: the shares they set for idols, the animals they declared forbidden and the rules of slaughter (6:136 to 145).
- The word «أَنْعَام» occurs in the ayat of these customs (for example 6:136, 138, 139 and 142), and the eight pairs of cattle are described in 6:143 to 144.
- As with many surahs, the name is only a sign to recognise the surah: its subject is wider, namely tawhid, risalah and akhirah.
Period and occasion of revelation (shan-e-nuzul)
Al-An'am is a Makki surah of the late Makki period. In Maududi's view it came down about the 12th year of prophethood, when the Muslims in Makkah were suffering persecution and the call of Islam seemed to be blocked, a short time before the hijrah. It has no single incident as its occasion of revelation: its occasion is the situation in Makkah and the objections and demands of the Quraish, which the whole surah answers. It was revealed mostly at one time.
Say this plainly in the exam: the shan-e-nuzul of Al-An'am is its background, not one event.
The background: what the Quraish said and did
- They denied the Prophet (ﷺ) and called the Quran magic or the tales of the ancients (6:7, 6:25).
- They asked why an angel had not been sent down with him (6:8 to 9) and why no sign (miracle) had been sent (6:37).
- They swore their strongest oaths that they would believe if a sign came (6:109), and the surah says they would not believe even if angels came down and the dead spoke to them (6:111).
- They worshipped idols and jinn as partners of Allah, set aside shares of crops and cattle for them, forbade some animals by their own claim and even killed their children (6:100, 6:136 to 140).
- The surah answers them with three bases of faith: tawhid, risalah and akhirah, and consoles the Prophet (ﷺ) that earlier messengers were also denied and were patient (6:33 to 34).
The central theme (مرکزی مضمون)
The central theme is the call to the three bases of faith: the oneness of Allah (tawhid), the prophethood of the Messenger (ﷺ) (risalah) and the Hereafter (akhirah), with the removal of the doubts of the polytheists about each, and the refutation of the superstitions and customs that grew out of shirk.

Virtues: what is authentic
There is no well-known authentic hadith that gives a fixed reward for reciting the whole of Surah Al-An'am. Do not write a virtue of the whole surah in the exam unless you add that the narration is weak. What is authentic is the hadith attached to two particular ayat.
The weak narration (graded weak)
A narration from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (RA) in the tafsir works (Tabarani) says that Al-An'am came down at once with 70,000 angels. It is graded weak. If a question asks for it, write it with (graded weak).
6:82: the meaning of injustice (zulm)
They who believe and do not mix their belief with injustice - those will have security, and they are [rightly] guided
When this ayah was revealed, the Companions were troubled and said: which of us has not wronged himself? The Prophet (ﷺ) explained that the injustice here is shirk, as Luqman said to his son, that shirk is a great injustice (31:13). Reported in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim from Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud (RA).
6:158: the rising of the sun from the west
Do they [then] wait for anything except that the angels should come to them or your Lord should come or that there come some of the signs of your Lord? The Day that some of the signs of your Lord will come no soul will benefit from its faith as long as it had not believed before or had earned through its faith some good. Say, "Wait. Indeed, we [also] are waiting
The Prophet (ﷺ) said that the Hour will not come until the sun rises from the west; when people see it they will all believe, but that is the time when no soul will benefit from its faith (the ayah). Reported in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim from Hazrat Abu Hurairah (RA).
Tawhid and the signs of Allah
Tawhid is the first and biggest theme of the surah. The Quran proves it from creation, from man's own need in hardship and from the Hereafter, and then rejects the shirk of the Quraish: idols, jinn, and sons and daughters of Allah.
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, who created the heavens and the earth and made the darkness and the light. Then those who disbelieve equate [others] with their Lord
Proofs of tawhid in the surah
- Creation: Allah created the heavens, the earth, the darkness and the light (6:1), and created man from clay (6:2).
- Knowledge: He knows what you hide and what you show (6:3) and with Him are the keys of the unseen (6:59).
- Provision: He feeds and is not fed (6:14), so no one else deserves to be taken as a protector.
- Harm and benefit: if Allah touches you with harm none can remove it but Him, and if He touches you with good He is able to do all things (6:17).
- Man's own experience: in the darkness of land and sea people call on Allah alone, then forget Him when saved (6:63 to 64, 6:40 to 41).
- Signs in nature: He splits the grain and the date-stone, brings the living from the dead, splits the daybreak, made the night for rest, the sun and moon for reckoning and the stars for guidance, and sends down rain from which every plant grows (6:95 to 99).
Shirk refuted
- The polytheists made the jinn partners of Allah although He created them, and invented sons and daughters for Him; Allah is far above this (6:100).
- How can He have a son when He has no companion and has created everything? (6:101).
- He is the Creator of all things, so worship Him alone (6:102); vision cannot grasp Him, but He grasps all vision (6:103).
Vision perceives Him not, but He perceives [all] vision; and He is the Subtle, the Acquainted
Teachings
- Worship, ask and trust Allah alone.
- Look at creation: it points to one Creator.
- Do not remember Allah only in trouble.
6:74 to 90Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) and the 18 prophetsحضرت ابراہیم علیہ السلام اور 18 انبیاءOften examined
This is the best-known story of the surah (6:74 to 90). The Quraish called themselves the children of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) yet worshipped idols; the surah shows how Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) rejected shirk with reason, and then names the line of prophets who came with the same message.
And [mention, O Muhammad], when Abraham said to his father Azar, "Do you take idols as deities? Indeed, I see you and your people to be in manifest error
The story in order
- The prophet and the people: Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) and his people, among them his father Azar, who worshipped idols (6:74). He told them they were in manifest error.
- Allah showed him the realm of the heavens and the earth so that he would be among those of certain faith (6:75).
- The star: when night covered him he saw a star and said, this is my lord; when it set he said, I do not love those that set (6:76).
- The moon: he saw the moon rising and said, this is my lord; when it set he said, if my Lord does not guide me I shall be among the people gone astray (6:77).
- The sun: he saw the sun rising and said, this is my lord, this is greater; when it set he said, O my people, I am free of what you associate with Allah (6:78).
- His declaration: I have turned my face to Him who created the heavens and the earth, inclining to the truth, and I am not of the polytheists (6:79).
- How they answered: his people argued with him and tried to frighten him with their gods. He replied that he did not fear what they associated, only what his Lord willed (6:80 to 81).
- The principle: those who believe and do not mix their faith with injustice (shirk) have security and are guided (6:82).
- Allah called all this His own argument which He gave to Ibrahim against his people (6:83).
Indeed, I have turned my face toward He who created the heavens and the earth, inclining toward truth, and I am not of those who associate others with Allah
The 18 prophets named (6:83 to 86)
After Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) the surah names the prophets Allah guided from his line and others: Ishaq, Yaqub, Nuh, Dawud, Sulayman, Ayyub, Yusuf, Musa, Harun, Zakariyya, Yahya, Isa, Ilyas, Ismail, Al-Yasa, Yunus and Lut (peace be upon them all). With Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) they are 18 prophets in these ayat. It then says: these are the ones Allah guided, so follow their guidance (6:90).
Those are the ones whom Allah has guided, so from their guidance take an example. Say, "I ask of you for this message no payment. It is not but a reminder for the worlds

The doubts and demands of the Quraishقریش کے شبہات اور مطالباتOften examined
The Quraish found many excuses for not believing. The surah lists them one by one and answers each. This is the background (shan-e-nuzul) of the surah in detail.
| What they said or demanded | Ayah | The answer of the Quran |
|---|---|---|
| Why was no angel sent down with him? | 6:8 to 9 | If an angel had been sent down, the matter would have been decided and they would get no more time; and if an angel had been made the messenger, he would have been sent in the form of a man. |
| Even a written book in their hands would be called magic | 6:7 | The disbelievers would still say it is clear magic. |
| Why has no sign (miracle) been sent down to him? | 6:37 | Allah is able to send down a sign, but most of them do not know. |
| They swore their strongest oaths that they would believe if a sign came | 6:109 to 111 | Signs are only with Allah; even if angels came, the dead spoke and everything was gathered before them, they would not believe unless Allah willed. |
| The Quran is only the tales of the ancients | 6:25 to 26 | Allah has put coverings on their hearts and deafness in their ears; they hinder others and destroy only themselves. |
| We shall never believe until we are given what the messengers were given | 6:124 | Allah knows best where to place His message; humiliation and severe punishment await the criminals. |
| Bring us the punishment you threaten, quickly | 6:57 to 58 | The Prophet (ﷺ) said that what they hasten is not in his hands, the decision belongs to Allah alone. |
| Allah has not revealed anything to a human being | 6:91 | Who then revealed the Book that Musa brought as light and guidance? Say, Allah. |

What the Prophet (ﷺ) was told to say about himself
He is not an angel, does not own Allah's treasures and does not know the unseen by himself; he only follows what is revealed to him (6:50). He is on clear evidence from his Lord (6:57), asks no payment (6:90), and is not a guardian over them (6:66, 6:107).
Consolation of the Prophet (ﷺ)
- They do not really call you a liar: it is the ayat of Allah that the wrongdoers deny (6:33).
- Messengers before you were denied; they were patient and were harmed until Allah's help came, and none can change Allah's words (6:34).
- If their turning away is hard on you, you cannot force them: if Allah willed He would have gathered them on guidance, so do not be of the ignorant (6:35).
- Only those who hear will respond (6:36).
6:6, 6:10 to 11, 6:42 to 45The past nations and their destructionسابقہ اقوام اور ان کی ہلاکتOften examined
Again and again the surah reminds the Quraish of the nations destroyed before them. The model paper printed 6:6 in an ayah question: learn it well.
Have they not seen how many generations We destroyed before them which We had established upon the earth as We have not established you? And We sent [rain from] the sky upon them in showers and made rivers flow beneath them; then We destroyed them for their sins and brought forth after them a generation of others
What 6:6 says
- Allah destroyed many generations («قَرْن») before them.
- Blessings given to them: He had established them on the earth with a power He has not given to the Quraish; He sent rain from the sky upon them in showers; and He made rivers flow beneath them.
- Cause of destruction: their sins (disbelief, denial and ingratitude).
- Then Allah raised another generation after them: no nation is irreplaceable.
Other ayat on past nations
- 6:10: messengers were mocked before you, and the mockers were encircled by what they mocked («حَاقَ» in this ayah means it surrounded them).
- 6:11: travel through the land and see the end of the deniers.
- 6:42 to 45: Allah sent messengers to earlier nations and seized them with poverty and hardship so that they might humble themselves; when they did not, He opened every door of good for them, and when they rejoiced He seized them suddenly (6:44). The wrongdoers were cut off.
- 6:131: Allah does not destroy cities for wrongdoing while their people are unaware: warners always come first.
- 6:133: Allah is free of need and can replace you with others, as He raised you from the descendants of other people.

6:151 to 153 and othersBeliefs and social attitudes (long topic 1)عقائد اور معاشرتی رویے (تفصیلی مضمون 1)Often examined
Long topic 1 asks for the commands of Islam on beliefs and on social behaviour in Al-An'am, and the attitudes of ours that need to be reformed. This section is the compact version: the core is the commandments of 6:151 to 153.
A. Commands on beliefs

- Do not divide the religion into sects (6:159); follow the one straight path (6:153).

6:136 to 144, 6:148 to 150The pagan customs about crops, cattle and childrenفصلوں، مویشیوں اور اولاد سے متعلق جاہلی رسمیںOften examined
The Quraish had invented customs about their crops, cattle and children, and attributed them to Allah. The surah calls these an invention of untruth against Allah (6:138, 6:140). The model paper MCQ 3 asks the same: the doubts of the polytheists about lawful and unlawful animals.
And the polytheists assign to Allah from that which He created of crops and livestock a share and say, "This is for Allah," by their claim, "and this is for our partners [associated with Him]." But what is for their "partners" does not reach Allah, while what is for Allah - this reaches their "partners." Evil is that which they rule
| The custom | Ayah | The Quran's verdict |
|---|---|---|
| They set a share of crops and cattle for Allah and a share for their partners (idols); what was for the idols never went to Allah, but what was for Allah could go to the idols | 6:136 | Evil is what they judge |
| Their partners made the killing of their children seem good | 6:137, 6:140 | It is a loss and a going astray; they did it in foolishness without knowledge |
| They declared some animals and crops forbidden, to be eaten only by whom they chose, and some camels whose backs were forbidden | 6:138 | An invention of untruth about Allah; He will punish them |
| They said what is in the bellies of certain cattle is for our males and forbidden to our females; but if it is born dead all share it | 6:139 | Allah will punish them for their description |
The Quran's answer by reason
- Allah alone created crops and cattle (6:141 to 142), so only He decides what is lawful.
- The eight pairs (6:143 to 144): two of sheep, two of goats, two of camels and two of cattle. The Quran asks: is it the two males He forbade, or the two females, or what the wombs contain? Bring knowledge if you are truthful. Were you present when Allah gave you this order?
- Who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allah to mislead people without knowledge? (6:144).
- When they said that if Allah willed they would not have been polytheists (6:148), the answer: you follow only assumption and guess. To Allah belongs the conclusive argument (6:149).

- Eat of what the name of Allah has been mentioned on, if you believe in His ayat (6:118).
- Why should you not eat of what Allah's name was mentioned on, when He has explained what is forbidden to you, except what you are compelled to (6:119)?
- Do not eat of what Allah's name was not mentioned on: it is disobedience («
- The devils whisper to their friends to dispute with you; if you obey them you become polytheists (6:121).
And do not eat of that upon which the name of Allah has not been mentioned, for indeed, it is grave disobedience. And indeed do the devils inspire their allies [among men] to dispute with you. And if you were to obey them, indeed, you would be associators [of others with Him]
B. What is forbidden (6:145)
Say, "I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal or blood spilled out or the flesh of swine - for indeed, it is impure - or it be [that slaughtered in] disobedience, dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], then indeed, your Lord is Forgiving and Merciful
- 1. A dead animal («مَيْتَة»), one that died without being slaughtered.
- 2. Blood poured out (flowing blood).
- 3. The flesh of swine, because it is impure («
- 4. What is slaughtered in disobedience, dedicated to other than Allah.
The ayah then gives the exception of necessity: whoever is forced, neither desiring nor transgressing, then Allah is Forgiving and Merciful (6:145). The further details (the strangled, the beaten, the fallen, the gored) are in Al-Ma'idah 5:3.
C. The animals that were made forbidden to the Jews (6:146)
And to those who are Jews We prohibited every animal of uncloven hoof; and of the cattle and the sheep We prohibited to them their fat, except what adheres to their backs or the entrails or what is joined with bone. [By] that We repaid them for their injustice. And indeed, We are truthful
- Every animal with an uncloven hoof («ذِيْ ظُفُر») was forbidden to the Jews.
- The fat of cattle and sheep was forbidden to them, except what is on the back, the entrails or what is joined with bone.
- This was a punishment for their injustice (6:146); in Islam these were not made forbidden for us.
D. Lawful provision and the refutation of the pagan rules
- Eat of what Allah has provided and do not follow the footsteps of Satan (6:142).
- The eight pairs of cattle are lawful; the pagan prohibitions on males, females or unborn young are without knowledge (6:143 to 144).
- Announcing that Allah has forbidden something without proof is a lie against Allah (6:150).

6:12, 6:22 to 32, 6:60 to 62, 6:160 to 164The Hereafter and accountability
The Hereafter is the third base of faith. The surah describes the Day of Judgement and the deniers' regret, and promises tenfold reward for good deeds.
- Allah has decreed mercy on Himself and will gather all for the Day of Resurrection about which there is no doubt (6:12).
- The polytheists will be asked: where are the partners you claimed? and will deny their own shirk (6:22 to 24).
- Standing before the Fire they will say, if only we were sent back; but they would return to what they were forbidden, for they are liars (6:27 to 28).
- They said, there is only our worldly life, and we shall not be raised (6:29); before their Lord they will confess the truth (6:30).
- When the Hour comes suddenly («بَغْتَةً») they will cry in regret and carry their burdens on their backs (6:31).
- The worldly life is only play and amusement; the home of the Hereafter is better for those who fear Allah (6:32).
- Allah takes your souls at night and knows what you did by day (6:60); angels guard you until death comes (6:61); then all return to Allah, the swiftest in reckoning (6:62).
- Whoever brings a good deed gets ten times its like; whoever brings an evil deed is repaid only its like; none will be wronged (6:160).
- No bearer of burdens bears the burden of another (6:164).
Whoever comes [on the Day of Judgement] with a good deed will have ten times the like thereof [to his credit], and whoever comes with an evil deed will not be recompensed except the like thereof; and they will not be wronged
Say, "Is it other than Allah I should desire as a lord while He is the Lord of all things? And every soul earns not [blame] except against itself, and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you concerning that over which you used to differ
Lessons
- Live for the Hereafter: the world is a short test.
- Do good deeds because Allah multiplies them and is never unjust.
- Each of us is answerable alone, so no excuse of following others will help.
6:50, 6:59, 6:73The keys of the unseen
Another central ayah of the surah is 6:59: the keys of the unseen are with Allah alone. The surah teaches that the knowledge of the unseen belongs only to Allah and that even the Prophet (ﷺ) knew only what Allah told him.
And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record
- With Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them but He (6:59).
- He knows what is on land and in the sea; no leaf falls without His knowledge (6:59).
- There is no grain in the darkness of the earth and nothing wet or dry but it is in a clear record (6:59).
- The Prophet (ﷺ) was told to say: I do not say that I have Allah's treasures, nor that I know the unseen, nor that I am an angel; I only follow what is revealed to me (6:50).
- Allah is the Knower of the unseen and the seen (6:73).
Lesson: do not seek the unseen from anyone but Allah; the Prophet (ﷺ) is a servant and a messenger who follows the revelation.
6:52 to 54, 6:68, 6:104 to 108Manners of calling to Allah
The surah also teaches the Prophet (ﷺ) and the believers how to deal with those who deny.
- Do not send away the poor believers (6:52). It is reported in Sahih Muslim (from Hazrat Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (RA)) that the Quraish leaders asked the Prophet (ﷺ) to send away poor Companions such as Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud (RA) and Hazrat Bilal (RA), and the ayah was revealed.
- Greet the believers with peace and tell them that their Lord has decreed mercy on Himself: whoever does wrong out of ignorance and repents is forgiven (6:54).
- Turn away from those who mock the ayat of Allah until they change the subject (6:68).
- Do not insult what others worship, lest they insult Allah (6:108).
- You are not a guardian over them: your duty is to convey (6:104, 6:107).
- Remind with the Quran those who fear the gathering (6:51, 6:70).
And do not insult those they invoke other than Allah, lest they insult Allah in enmity without knowledge. Thus We have made pleasing to every community their deeds. Then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them about what they used to do
Rukus 1 to 3, ayat 1 to 30Rukus 1 to 3 (ayat 1 to 30): tawhid and the first warnings
Ruku 1 (ayat 1 to 10)
Praise belongs to Allah who created the heavens, the earth, the darkness and the light, yet the disbelievers equate others with Him (6:1). He created man from clay and fixed a term (6:2). The disbelievers turn away from every sign (6:4); Allah reminds them of the generations He destroyed (6:6). They ask for an angel or a written book (6:7 to 9); messengers before were mocked and the mockers were surrounded by what they mocked (6:10).
Ruku 2 (ayat 11 to 20)
Travel through the land and see the end of the deniers (6:11). To Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth; He has decreed mercy on Himself and will gather all on the Day of Resurrection (6:12). He alone is the Protector who feeds and is not fed (6:14). Harm and good are in His hand (6:17). Allah is the greatest witness between the Prophet (ﷺ) and them; the Quran was revealed to warn (6:19). The People of the Book recognise the Prophet (ﷺ) as they recognise their sons (6:20).
Ruku 3 (ayat 21 to 30)
Who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against Allah (6:21)? The scene of the Day of Gathering: where are your partners? (6:22 to 24). Some listen to the Prophet (ﷺ) but have coverings on their hearts (6:25). Before the Fire they will wish to return (6:27 to 28). They said, there is only this life (6:29); before their Lord they will confess the truth (6:30).
Say, "To whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and earth?" Say, "To Allah." He has decreed upon Himself mercy. He will surely assemble you for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. Those who will lose themselves [that Day] do not believe
And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allah a lie or denies His verses? Indeed, the wrongdoers will not succeed

Ruku 4 (ayat 31 to 41)
Those who deny the meeting with Allah are the losers; when the Hour comes suddenly they will bear their burdens on their backs (6:31). The worldly life is only play and amusement (6:32). The Prophet (ﷺ) is consoled: they do not reject you but the ayat of Allah; earlier messengers were denied and patient (6:33 to 34). They ask for a sign (6:37). Birds and animals are communities like you and nothing is left out of the Register (6:38). Those who deny are deaf and dumb in darkness (6:39). In calamity they call on Allah alone (6:40 to 41).
Ruku 5 (ayat 42 to 50)
Earlier nations were seized with poverty and hardship so that they might humble themselves, but their hearts hardened (6:42 to 43). Then Allah opened the doors of everything for them and seized them suddenly (6:44 to 45). If Allah took your hearing and sight, who else could return them (6:46)? The messengers only bring good news and warning (6:48). The Prophet (ﷺ) says: I do not have Allah's treasures, I do not know the unseen and I am not an angel (6:50).
And the worldly life is not but amusement and diversion; but the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allah, so will you not reason
Say, [O Muhammad], "I do not tell you that I have the depositories [containing the provision] of Allah or that I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me." Say, "Is the blind equivalent to the seeing? Then will you not give thought

The Prophet (ﷺ) is forbidden to worship what they call on and will not follow their desires (6:56). He stands on clear evidence from his Lord (6:57); the decision is Allah's alone (6:57 to 58). With Allah are the keys of the unseen (6:59). He takes the souls at night and sends them back by day until the term is fulfilled (6:60).
Ruku 8 (ayat 61 to 70)
Guardian angels protect you until death; then all return to Allah, the swiftest in reckoning (6:61 to 62). Who saves you from the darkness of land and sea when you call Him in fear? Yet you associate others (6:63 to 64). He can send punishment from above or below or split you into sects (6:65). When you see people mocking Allah's ayat, turn away from them (6:68). Leave those who take religion as play and amusement (6:70).
And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record
And when you see those who engage in [offensive] discourse concerning Our verses, then turn away from them until they enter into another conversation. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not remain after the reminder with the wrongdoing people

Ruku 9 (ayat 71 to 82)
Shall we call on what neither benefits nor harms us? The guidance of Allah is the only guidance (6:71). Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) tells his father Azar that idols are a manifest error (6:74). Allah shows him the realm of the heavens and the earth (6:75). The star, the moon and the sun set and he declares he is free from shirk (6:76 to 79). His people argue and he is not afraid of their gods (6:80 to 81). Security is for those who believe and do not mix their belief with injustice (6:82).
Ruku 10 (ayat 83 to 90)
This was Allah's argument which He gave Ibrahim (6:83). Allah gave him Ishaq and Yaqub; and Nuh and the line of prophets: Dawud, Sulayman, Ayyub, Yusuf, Musa, Harun, Zakariyya, Yahya, Isa, Ilyas, Ismail, Al-Yasa, Yunus and Lut (6:84 to 86). They were guided and chosen (6:87 to 88); Allah gave them the Book, judgement and prophethood (6:89). Follow their guidance; the Prophet (ﷺ) asks for no payment (6:90).
And [mention, O Muhammad], when Abraham said to his father Azar, "Do you take idols as deities? Indeed, I see you and your people to be in manifest error
They who believe and do not mix their belief with injustice - those will have security, and they are [rightly] guided
And that was Our [conclusive] argument which We gave Abraham against his people. We raise by degrees whom We will. Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing

Ruku 11 (ayat 91 to 94)
They did not value Allah as He should be valued when they said that Allah revealed nothing to a human being; who revealed the Book of Musa (6:91)? This Quran is a blessed Book confirming earlier books, to warn the Mother of Cities (Makkah) and those around it (6:92). Who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against Allah or claims revelation falsely (6:93)? On the Day each will come alone, as created the first time, leaving behind what they were given (6:94).
Ruku 12 (ayat 95 to 100)
Allah splits the grain and the date-stone, brings the living from the dead (6:95), splits the daybreak, made the night for rest and the sun and moon for reckoning (6:96), placed the stars for guidance on land and sea (6:97), produced you from one soul (6:98), and sends rain that grows every plant, grains, date palms, grapes, olives and pomegranates (6:99). Yet they made the jinn partners of Allah and invented sons and daughters for Him (6:100).
Ruku 13 (ayat 101 to 110)
Allah is the Originator of the heavens and the earth: how can He have a son (6:101)? He is the Creator of all things (6:102); vision does not perceive Him but He perceives all vision (6:103). Insight has come from your Lord (6:104). Follow the revelation and turn away from the polytheists; you are not a guardian over them (6:106 to 107). Do not insult those they call on besides Allah (6:108). They swear that they would believe if a sign came; signs are with Allah alone (6:109). Their hearts and eyes are turned away as they refused the first time (6:110).
Indeed, Allah is the cleaver of grain and date seeds. He brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living. That is Allah; so how are you deluded
And do not insult those they invoke other than Allah, lest they insult Allah in enmity without knowledge. Thus We have made pleasing to every community their deeds. Then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them about what they used to do

Ruku 14 (ayat 111 to 121)
Even if angels came down and the dead spoke to them they would not believe unless Allah willed (6:111). Every prophet has enemies among the devils of men and jinn who inspire one another with decorated speech (6:112). The Quran is a Book explained in detail and the People of the Book know it is true (6:114). The word of your Lord is complete in truth and justice (6:115). If you obey most of those on earth they will mislead you; they follow only assumption (6:116). Eat of what Allah's name was mentioned on (6:118 to 119); leave sin, open and hidden (6:120); do not eat of what Allah's name was not mentioned on (6:121).
Ruku 15 (ayat 122 to 129)
Is one who was dead and We gave him life and a light by which he walks among people like one in darkness (6:122)? Every city has its great criminals who plot, but they plot only against themselves (6:123). They say they will not believe until given what the messengers were given; Allah knows best where to place His message (6:124). Whoever Allah wants to guide, He opens his chest to Islam; whoever He wants to leave astray, He makes his chest tight (6:125). This is the straight path of your Lord (6:126). For the believers is the Home of Peace (6:127). The jinn and their human friends will be brought together and told that the Fire is their home (6:128 to 129).
And if you obey most of those upon the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allah. They follow not except assumption, and they are not but falsifying
So whoever Allah wants to guide - He expands his breast to [contain] Islam; and whoever He wants to misguide - He makes his breast tight and constricted as though he were climbing into the sky. Thus does Allah place defilement upon those who do not believe

On the Day jinn and men will be asked: did messengers not come to you from among you with My ayat (6:130)? Allah does not destroy cities unjustly while their people are unaware (6:131). Your Lord is Free of need and Merciful; He can replace you (6:133). What you are promised will come (6:134). The pagan customs: shares for Allah and idols (6:136), killing children (6:137), forbidding crops and cattle by their claim (6:138 to 139). Those who killed their children in foolishness are the losers (6:140).
Ruku 17 (ayat 141 to 144)
Allah causes gardens, palm trees, crops, olives and pomegranates to grow; eat of their fruit and give its due on the day of harvest, and do not be extravagant (6:141). Of cattle are those for carrying and for food; eat of what Allah gave and do not follow Satan (6:142). The eight pairs of sheep, goats, camels and cattle: He forbade neither the males nor the females nor what the wombs hold; who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against Allah (6:143 to 144)?
Ruku 18 (ayat 145 to 150)
Say: I do not find in what has been revealed to me anything forbidden to eat except a dead animal, flowing blood, the flesh of swine, or what is slaughtered for other than Allah; but whoever is compelled, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful (6:145). For the Jews every animal with an uncloven hoof and certain fat were forbidden (6:146). The polytheists will say, if Allah had willed we would not have associated (6:148); the answer is that they follow only assumption (6:148 to 149). Do not testify with them (6:150).

Eat of [each of] its fruit when it yields and give its due [zakah] on the day of its harvest. And be not excessive. Indeed, He does not like those who commit excess

Say: come, I will recite what your Lord has forbidden to you (6:151). The commandments: no shirk, kindness to parents, no killing of children for poverty, no indecency, no unlawful killing (6:151); do not touch the orphan's property except in the best way, give full measure, be just in speech and keep Allah's covenant (6:152); follow My straight path (6:153). Then Allah gave Musa the Book as a complete favour, explaining everything (6:154).

Ruku 20 (ayat 155 to 165)
This Quran is a blessed Book: follow it and fear Allah (6:155). It was sent down so that they cannot say that the Book came only to two groups before us (6:156 to 157). They wait for angels or Allah's signs; on the Day some signs come, faith will not benefit one who did not believe before (6:158). Those who divided their religion into sects are not the Prophet's (ﷺ) concern (6:159). A good deed is rewarded tenfold (6:160). The Prophet (ﷺ) is told to declare: my Lord guided me to a straight path, the religion of Ibrahim (6:161); my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds (6:162 to 163); I seek no lord but Allah; no bearer of burdens bears another's burden (6:164). He made you successors on the earth and raised some above others in rank to test you (6:165).
Say, "Come, I will recite what your Lord has prohibited to you. [He commands] that you not associate anything with Him, and to parents, good treatment, and do not kill your children out of poverty; We will provide for you and them. And do not approach immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed. And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed] except by [legal] right. This has He instructed you that you may use reason (151) And do not approach the orphan's property except in a way that is best until he reaches maturity. And give full measure and weight in justice. We do not charge any soul except [with that within] its capacity. And when you testify, be just, even if [it concerns] a near relative. And the covenant of Allah fulfill. This has He instructed you that you may remember (152) And, [moreover], this is My path, which is straight, so follow it; and do not follow [other] ways, for you will be separated from His way. This has He instructed you that you may become righteous (153)
Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds (162) No partner has He. And this I have been commanded, and I am the first [among you] of the Muslims (163) Say, "Is it other than Allah I should desire as a lord while He is the Lord of all things? And every soul earns not [blame] except against itself, and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you concerning that over which you used to differ (164)

Each short question carries 2 marks: write two clear points with the ayah numbers. The paper gives an OR for each question, so prepare the introduction questions, the stories and the teachings of the surah.
- «الأنعام» means cattle (camels, cows, sheep and goats).
- The surah speaks of the pagan customs about cattle: shares for idols, animals declared forbidden and the rules of slaughter (6:136 to 145); the word occurs in 6:136, 138, 139 and 142.
- It has 165 ayat and 20 rukus, in paras 7 and 8, and is the 6th surah.
- It is Makki, revealed in Makkah in the late Makki period.
- It was revealed in the late Makki period; in Maududi's view about the 12th year of prophethood, a short time before the hijrah, when the Muslims were being persecuted.
- It was revealed mostly at one time. The narration that it came with 70,000 angels is graded weak.
- It has no single incident as its occasion: the occasion is the situation in Makkah, where the Quraish denied the Prophet (ﷺ), mocked the Quran and demanded angels and miracles (6:7 to 9, 6:37, 6:109 to 111).
- They also followed pagan customs about cattle and children (6:136 to 140). The surah answers all this with tawhid, risalah and akhirah and consoles the Prophet (ﷺ).
- The call to the three bases of faith: tawhid (the oneness of Allah), risalah (prophethood) and akhirah (the Hereafter).
- The removal of the doubts of the polytheists and the refutation of the superstitions and customs that came from shirk.
- They asked why an angel was not sent down with the Prophet (ﷺ) (6:8). Answer: if an angel had been sent, the matter would have been decided and they would have no more time; an angel messenger would also have come as a man (6:8 to 9).
- They asked for a sign (6:37). Answer: Allah is able to send a sign but most of them do not know; even if angels came and the dead spoke they would not believe unless Allah willed (6:37, 6:111).
- Blessings: He gave them power on the earth such as He did not give the Quraish, sent rain upon them in showers and made rivers flow beneath them.
- They were destroyed because of their sins (disbelief and denial), and Allah raised other generations after them.
- He said, this is my lord, of the star, then the moon, then the sun; each one set, and he said, I do not love those that set (6:76 to 78).
- He then declared that he turned his face to the Creator of the heavens and the earth, inclining to the truth, and was free of the polytheists (6:79).
- Any four of: Ishaq, Yaqub, Nuh, Dawud, Sulayman, Ayyub, Yusuf, Musa, Harun (peace be upon them).
- Others: Zakariyya, Yahya, Isa, Ilyas, Ismail, Al-Yasa, Yunus and Lut: 18 in all with Ibrahim.
- The keys of the unseen are with Allah alone; none knows them but He.
- He knows all that is on land and in the sea; not a leaf falls and no grain lies in the darkness of the earth without His knowledge, and everything is in a clear record.
- I do not say that I have the treasures of Allah, nor that I know the unseen, nor that I am an angel.
- I only follow what is revealed to me; and the blind and the seeing are not equal.
- Do not associate anything with Allah, and be good to your parents (6:151).
- Do not kill your children for fear of poverty; give full measure and weight; be just in speech; fulfil Allah's covenant (6:151 to 152). Any one of these as the second point.
- Forbidden: a dead animal, blood poured out, the flesh of swine, and what is slaughtered in disobedience, dedicated to other than Allah (any two).
- Exception: whoever is forced by necessity, neither desiring it nor exceeding the limit, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
- Eat of what Allah's name has been mentioned on (6:118).
- Do not eat of what Allah's name has not been mentioned on: it is disobedience («فِسْق»), and obeying those who dispute this makes one a polytheist (6:121).
- They set a share of crops and cattle for Allah and a share for their idols; what was for the idols did not reach Allah (6:136).
- They killed their children (6:137, 6:140) and declared some animals and crops forbidden by their own claim (6:138 to 139); Allah calls this an invention of untruth.
- Reward: a good deed is rewarded ten times its like, and an evil deed only with its like, without injustice (6:160).
- Responsibility: every soul earns only against itself and no bearer of burdens bears the burden of another (6:164).
- Because they will insult Allah in enmity and without knowledge.
- It teaches good manners in calling to Allah: every community thinks its deeds good, and all will return to their Lord, who will inform them of what they did.
- When the ayah was revealed the Companions asked which of them had not wronged himself.
- The Prophet (ﷺ) said that the injustice here is shirk, as Luqman said that shirk is a great injustice (31:13). (Reported from Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud (RA).)
- If you obey most of those on the earth they will mislead you from the way of Allah.
- The reason: they follow only assumption and guess. So the truth is judged by revelation and knowledge, not by numbers.
- Every animal with an uncloven hoof, and the fat of cattle and sheep except what is on the back, the entrails or joined to bone.
- It was a repayment for their injustice («بَغْي»), and Allah is truthful.

Have they not seen how many generations We destroyed before them which We had established upon the earth as We have not established you? And We sent [rain from] the sky upon them in showers and made rivers flow beneath them; then We destroyed them for their sins and brought forth after them a generation of others
- He established them on the earth with a power He did not give the Quraish.
- He sent rain upon them in showers and made rivers flow beneath them.

And the worldly life is not but amusement and diversion; but the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allah, so will you not reason
It is only play and amusement.

Say, [O Muhammad], "I do not tell you that I have the depositories [containing the provision] of Allah or that I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me." Say, "Is the blind equivalent to the seeing? Then will you not give thought

And do not insult those they invoke other than Allah, lest they insult Allah in enmity without knowledge. Thus We have made pleasing to every community their deeds. Then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them about what they used to do

And do not eat of that upon which the name of Allah has not been mentioned, for indeed, it is grave disobedience. And indeed do the devils inspire their allies [among men] to dispute with you. And if you were to obey them, indeed, you would be associators [of others with Him]

FBISE and model paper questions
Questions from the FBISE Model Paper SSC-II (Assessment Framework, session 2026-27 onwards) papers that belong to this unit, answered the way an examiner expects.
- ALawful and unlawful animalsحلال و حرام جانورAnswerجواب
- BInterest and trade
- CWine and gambling
- DHijrah and jihad
Answer A. Surah Al-An'am answers the pagan customs and doubts about animals, which the polytheists made lawful or unlawful by their own claim (6:118 to 121, 6:136 to 146). Interest and trade, wine and gambling, and hijrah and jihad are subjects of the Madani surahs.
- Surah Al-An'am is Makki, from the late Makki period (about the 12th year of prophethood in Maududi's view), and has no single incident as its occasion of revelation: its occasion is the situation in Makkah, where the Quraish denied the Prophet (ﷺ), mocked the Quran and demanded angels and miracles (6:7 to 9, 6:37, 6:109 to 111).
- They also followed pagan customs about cattle and children (6:136 to 140). The surah answers them with tawhid, risalah and akhirah, and consoles the Prophet (ﷺ) that earlier messengers were denied too (6:33 to 34).
- He sent rain upon them in showers from the sky and made rivers flow beneath them.
Their sins: Allah destroyed them for their sins (disbelief and denial) and raised other generations after them.
